What are the primary resources that determine the capacity of each of the following? a. Grocery store: For a grocery store, the primary resources that determine its capacity are the number of employees, the size of the store, and the availability of inventory. The number of employees determines how quickly tasks can be completed, such as checking out customers or restocking shelves. The size of the store affects how much inventory can be stored and how quickly customers can find what they need. The availability of inventory affects how many products the store can offer and how quickly it can restock popular items. b. A company that assembles appliances For a company that assembles appliances, the primary resources that determine its capacity are the number of assembly lines, the size of the assembly lines, and the availability of raw materials. The number of assembly lines affects how many appliances can be assembled at one time. The size of the assembly lines affects how quickly tasks can be completed, such as assembling an appliance or testing it for quality. The availability of raw materials affects how quickly the company can start new assembly lines or keep existing ones running. 2. How would you define the maximum capacity for the front desk of a hotel? What is meant by the effective capacity? Define the difference in these two terms relative to the number of customers that can be checked into the hotel in a given period. Maximum capacity is the theoretical maximum number of customers that can be checked in or out in a given period of time. It is calculated based on the number of check-in counters, the number of staff members at each counter, and the average amount of time it takes to check in or out a customer. Effective capacity is the actual number of customers that can be checked in or out in a given period of time. It is lower than the maximum capacity due to factors such as unplanned downtime, planned downtime, and customer wait times.
The difference between the maximum capacity and the effective capacity is the number of customers that are turned away or have to wait longer than they would like to be checked in or out. Some ways to improve the effective capacity of a hotel desk are to reduce unplanned downtime, manage customer wait times, and offer self-service check-in options. 3. Discuss the challenges that an operations manager can expect to encounter when applying the principles of process performance to the upstream (supply-based) section of a supply chain. When applying process performance principles to the upstream section of a supply chain, operations managers can expect to encounter various challenges related to supplier management, capacity planning, quality control, supply chain visibility, collaboration, inventory management, technology integration, regulatory compliance, and pricing and cost management. These challenges require a comprehensive and collaborative approach to ensure effective management of the supply chain and improve overall process performance. 4. Which would require a larger amount of excess capacity – a hospital emergency room or a doctor’s office? Why? A hospital emergency room would require a larger amount of excess capacity than a doctor's office. This is because the emergency room is designed to handle a much larger number of patients than the doctor's office, and therefore, it needs to have a larger excess capacity to accommodate additional patients. 5. How would you define the capacity of your school? In what way does capacity influence the value of your college experience? The capacity of my school refers to its ability to accommodate students, both in terms of physical facilities and the resources available to support education. It can be measured by factors such as the number of classrooms, dorm room space, faculty-to-student ratio, and the availability of support services like counseling, libraries, and other campus activities.
Chapter 6: Managing Quality Missed Class Assignment 1. Take a common product or service you are familiar with and provide an overview summary outline of the following: For a software development company to be successful in retaining my business, they need to deliver consistently high quality in several dimensions. The software must be reliable and perform well. This means that it must be free of bugs and errors and must be able to handle all the tasks I require it to without crashing or slowing down. The software must be affordable. This means that it must be priced competitively and must offer good value for the features and functionality it provides. a. What specific dimensions of quality does the manufacturer of the product or service provider you have chosen need to deliver consistently for them to be successful in retaining your business? Reliability is important because I want to be able to rely on the product or service to perform as expected without any unexpected failures. Performance is also important, as I want the product or service to be able to handle the tasks, I require it to without slowing down or crashing. Features are important because I want the product or service to have all the features I need, and to support any future features I may require. b. Provide examples of the Cost of Quality this manufacturer or Service provider may encounter Security features are implied in the software. Security is top notch on electronics these days but it can still be a very much possibility to encounter a virus or malware. Quality control, which includes testing and debugging the software to ensure that it meets the requirements and specifications. Quality assurance includes the processes and procedures that are in place to ensure that the software is of high quality. 2. It has been said that quality management is a “people” system, more than a technical system. If this is true, what conditions must first be in place for a firm to be successful with quality management? What are the possible repercussions for the firm if the employees aren’t committed to the quality management program? Since quality management is a people system, staff engagement and dedication are crucial to its success. A firm

must have several factors in place for success. The top management must define clear quality targets and provide resources and assistance, which is why leadership commitment is so important. Repercussions may result if staff members do not support the quality management program. Customers may become unsatisfied because of a drop in quality, harming the company's reputation. Employee engagement and dedication are essential components of the people system that is quality management. Leadership dedication, staff engagement, training, efficient communication, and a culture of continual development are crucial for success. If employees are not dedicated, consequences could include decreased quality, unhappy clients, and reputational harm to the company. 3. The chapter noted that digital technologies are giving firms and their consumers increased visibility into the supply chain and its activities.  Would this visibility be important to you? Why? Would you be willing to change your shopping habits in response to such visibility (i.e., pay more or change where you shop)? Why? Yes, increased visibility into the supply chain and its activities would be important to me because it would allow me to see where my products are coming from and how they are being produced. This would help me to make more informed decisions about what I buy and where I buy it from. I am willing to change my shopping habits in response to such visibility because I value knowing where my products come from and how they are being produced. I would rather pay more for products that are ethically and sustainably sourced than to buy products from companies that do not have these practices. 4. Employee empowerment is an essential element of quality management, especially in services. From your own experience, cite instances where a service provider empowered its employees to go the extra mile to delight you. Then indicate an instance where the opposite happened. TD Bank, my current employer empowers us each day. An example is when we have our daily huddles a lot of decision-making is involved, and recognition as well as rewards are met. I witness flexible hours are given and at times hybrid schedules for our wealth team. A sense of incorporating feedback as a central part of the company's culture. As well as communication and proper guidance/training. 5. Imagine you have been appointed head of quality control for your organization. During the first month, you interview consultants who are experts in the Deming, Juran, and Crosby Quality
Process. Each seems to be equally competent and easy to work with. a. Which consultant would you hire for your organization? Why? As head of quality control, I would hire the Deming consultant. This is because Deming's philosophy of quality management is based on the belief that quality is not something that is added to a product or service, but rather is inherent in the product or service itself. Deming's approach to quality management has been widely adopted by organizations around the world and has been credited with improving the quality of products and services, increasing customer satisfaction, and improving employee morale. The other two consultants, Juran and Crosby, also have a lot to offer in terms of quality management. However, their approaches are not as comprehensive or as focused on continuous improvement as Deming's approach.
