2 Scenario: Planning a Convoy Operation In this scenario, the Army is entrusted with transporting supplies from a military facility to an overseas operating base in a hostile location by convoy. The twenty-vehicle convoy includes supply trucks, gasoline tanks, and security vehicles. The Army has been given a concise time frame to get the supplies to the site where the operation would occur. MDMP Steps Receipt of Mission: Logistics support for the FOB is under the purview of the Army unit in charge of convoy operations. Mission Analysis: The team initiates a comprehensive analysis of the situation and the mission requirements. Course of Action Development: The analysis helps the unit develop various COAs that are workable, appropriate, and necessary for the objective. Course of Action Analysis: The unit analyzes each COA to determine its benefits, drawbacks, and dangers. Course of Action Comparison: To identify the best COA, the unit weighs the benefits of each one. Course of Action Approval: The division decides on the optimal strategy and submits it for approval to higher command. Orders Production: After the COA has been signed off on, the unit will generate orders outlining the steps to take in operation. Supervision and Execution: The MDMP procedure generates orders to oversee and carry out the mission. WARNO, OPORD, and FRAGO
3 The first notice of a planned mission or operation is called a "warning order" (or "WARNO"). It lays down the fundamentals, including the goal, the schedule, and the stuff needed to accomplish it. An OPORD, short for "operation order," is a comprehensive strategy for carrying out a specific mission or operation. The objective, the circumstances, the adversary, and the friendly troops are all detailed. To amend or revise an OPORD, one issues a FRAGO or fragmentary order. It contains details or alterations to the plan that were not previously available. In the scenario above, the WARNO would serve as the first warning to the Army unit about the convoy activity. Mission, schedule, and resource needs for the convoy operation would all be specified in the OPORD. Any deviation from the original plan—such as a deviation in the path or an unanticipated adversary action—could necessitate using a FRAGO.
