Unit 11 Forum
Find a video of a public speaker that you think is effective and persuasive. (Ted Talks
are a great source.) Analyze the speaker's performance, consider:
What elements of the presentation stood out?
What was strongest: the presentation's content or the presenter's
mannerisms?
Did the presenter use visual aids? Did they support the presenter's content?
Did the speaker engage the audience? If so, how?
How can you apply these exemplars to your own presentation (in this course
and in the future)?
Craft your analysis into a few paragraphs and paste a link to the video and your written
analysis into the Forum post.
For this forum I am going to talk about the video by
Lera
Boroditsky
named
"
How language shapes the way we think

".
This video talks about how the language we speak
shapes our thought process. In her own words "The beauty of linguistic
diversity is that it reveals to us just how ingenious and how flexible the
human mind is.Human minds have invented not one cognitive universe, but
7,000."
What elements of the presentation stood out?
Firstly, I love the way she speaks so that any layman can understand. She
started with a story which has a beautiful message to set up the premise of
the talk along with humor. She has a really great sense of humor and knows
how to catch audience's attention so that she can dive deep on the topic.
She uses effective comparison between different languages along with the
data and images, so that it becomes easier to connect to her research.
What was strongest: the presentation's content or the presenter's
mannerisms?
I feel both the content and the way she delivered those content was equally
strong. The content is definitely unique but her mannerism, body language,
verbal clarity, etc., increased the message's impact.
Did the presenter use visual aids? Did they support the presenter's
content?
Yes, the speaker used graphics and design drawings/renderings to effectively
illustrate her arguments and support her discussion. The visualizations made
it easier to comprehend the data and project tasks that were provided.
Did the speaker engage the audience? If so, how?
The speaker used stories, acts/role play as a part of her speech which made
the audience remain engaged throughout the presentation. Her ability to
easily and calmly articulate their thoughts was one of the key way to keep
the audience engaged.
How can you apply these exemplars to your own presentation (in
this course and in the future)?
The most crucial lesson I took away from this video is to have confidence and
the ability to articulate clearly as how she approached a so complex topic
and made it easy for understanding. I would also learn they way she
presented the data and her research as stories. Also, it's very important to
keep your audience engaged during the presentation. The presentation
should not be full of technical details so that people lose interest unless it is
a very technical presentation.
