UNDERSTANDING HOMELAND SECURITY 2 Understanding Homeland Security Discussion Post Prompt 1. National security is the whole range of strategies and actions implemented by a nation- state to safeguard its populace, territorial integrity, and vested interests against both domestic and foreign hazards. The term "national security" refers to a comprehensive set of policies and measures implemented to safeguard the welfare and protection of a country and its governing body (Newsome & Jarmon, 2020). The preservation of the sovereignty and independence of the United States, together with the development of military capabilities, information collection, diplomatic endeavors, and economic stability, are among the critical components of national security. Conversely, the concept of international security is centered on the preservation of peace and stability among nations at a global level. The concept encompasses the administration of conflicts, the mitigation of armed conflicts, and the resolution of collective challenges that have the potential to impact numerous nations (Newsome & Jarmon, 2020). The field of international security encompasses the examination of the interdependence of states. It seeks to foster the values of cooperation, collaboration, and mutual comprehension while discouraging the utilization of force or aggression as a mechanism for dispute resolution. The concept of homeland security primarily concerns safeguarding the United States against internal hazards, encompassing both occurrences of natural calamities and acts of terrorism. The task at hand encompasses the proactive measures and reactive actions taken to mitigate potential harm to American residents, essential infrastructure, and the smooth operation of society. According to Tanner & Beckner (2020), the field of homeland security centers on effective coordination among diverse governmental entities, including the Department of
UNDERSTANDING HOMELAND SECURITY 3 Homeland Security (DHS), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and law enforcement organizations tasked with upholding public safety. Prompt 2 The United States, Great Britain, and Canada exhibit distinct methodologies in the realm of homeland security. The United States places significant importance on safeguarding its borders, allocating substantial resources toward border security measures and immigration regulations (Newsome & Jarmon, 2020). On the other hand, Great Britain prioritizes the acquisition of intelligence and the dissemination of information to international counterparts as a means to counteract terrorism. Canada places significant emphasis on fostering robust integration and collaboration among diverse agencies and departments in order to guarantee a cohesive and efficient approach to addressing potential risks (McIntyre, 2019). In addition, Canada implements community-based strategies for homeland security, involving citizens in activities related to prevention and emergency response. In contrast, the United States and the United Kingdom mainly depend on professional agencies for these purposes. Various variables, including historical events, national security considerations, and cultural and political circumstances, have shaped the approach to homeland security in different countries. The events of the 9/11 attacks have significantly influenced the approach of the United States, while the approach of Great Britain has been shaped by the ongoing threat of domestic terrorism (Newsome & Jarmon, 2020). Examining comparative examples of homeland security is advantageous as it allows for the identification of optimal approaches, the acquisition of knowledge from both successful and unsuccessful endeavors, and the promotion of international collaboration in effectively tackling common security concerns.
