Chapter1 Assignment What is the defining difference between computer security and information security? The defining difference between computer security and information security is the scope of what they aim to protect. Computer Security Computer security is essentially concerned with preventing entry, theft, damage, or interruption of computer systems, networks, and the data stored or transmitted over them. Within the IT and telecom sectors, data security refers to hardware, software, and digital data (Galarita & Swanston, 2024). Information Security In contrast, a significant amount of extra information is included in information security. Whether they are digital, physical, or intellectual property, it includes safeguarding information assets against theft, tampering, disruption, usage, disclosure, and destruction in any forms or formats. Assurance of data privacy, authenticity, and accessibility in any format is the main goal of information security (Galarita & Swanston, 2024). Why can we argue that information security is really an application of social science? Information security is an application of social science, in our opinion, since it deals with social dynamics, human behavior, and motivations that can affect the security of information assets. A social science component to information security is due to the following main reasons: Insider threats: Insiders, employees, contractors, etc. that have permission but abuse it are the source of many security breaches. To lessen insider threats, one must understand human aspects like ethics, motivations, and organizational culture (Tunggal, 2023).
Chapter1 Assignment Social engineering: Phishing, pretexting, and baiting are common ways that attackers take use of human weaknesses. Complementing social engineering is knowledge of human behavior and psychology. Physical security: Information security also include safe document handling, access controls, and surveillance, all of which need an understanding of social dynamics and human relationships (Tunggal, 2023). Policies and awareness: Knowledge of human perception and response to security measures as well as how to positively impact their behavior is necessary for effective information security policies and user awareness initiatives. A globally interconnected commercial world has emerged from the technical advances that created the Internet. Has its creation increased or decreased the need for organizations to maintain secure operation of their systems? Why? Organizational requirement to maintain secure operations has grown dramatically with the development of the Internet and globally linked systems. For a few main reasons Increasingly exposed systems and data to the Internet have increased the number of possible attack channels and vulnerabilities, necessitating strong security measures (Blogger, 2024). Enhanced cyber dangers: Because the Internet is so linked, sophisticated cyberthreats including malware, botnets, and advanced persistent threats (APTs) have become more common and can target businesses anywhere in the world (Blogger, 2024).
