Silva-Medina 1 Week 2: Student Support Network Plan Ashley Silva-Medina The University of Arizona Global Campus GEN 101: Developing Skills and Strategies for Success Dr. Adolf Mizzell May 6, 2024
Silva-Medina 2 Have you ever been so nervous that you pace a dent into your floor? After 40 hours of online training, 20 hours of shadowing client sessions within the clinic, and 30 hours of running sessions with supervision, probably 60+ hours spent studying and organizing study binders…it was time to take my certification exam. I have always done well during any test I have taken; but this was the first exam I would take for a career field. It was also the last thing I needed before officially becoming a Registered Behavioral Technician (RBT). It had been almost four months of me being laser focused on my certification process. I knew that I studied all that I could possibly study and that I had the ability and knowledge needed in order to pass but, still, there I was pacing for what felt like hours as I waited for the testing room to open. I was not surprised when I found out I passed. But I did run to my husband and express how grateful I was for his unwavering support throughout every aspect of the process. Four months is a long time, in this fast paced world, to be laser focused on one thing. The world doesn’t stop moving. In fact, in our life during this time we were living in military base housing and we had to move because one of our dogs died due to the exposure of black mold that was growing in our air duct system. Base housing refused to help even after testing came back positive for black mold. In the four months of my training the first month was spent begging base housing to help us or move us to a new unit. Months 2-3 we gave up fighting base housing and decided to buy and move into our first home. Month four of my training we moved into and began settling into our home but then discovered after the first rainfall that we had several leaks in our roof and it would cost a couple grand to fix. All of this while my husband is active duty military and I am full-time Nanny. Needless to say there were many obstacles and being 1,300 miles away from friends and family, my goal of becoming a certified RBT felt like an uphill battle.
