Cultural Awareness Guidebook

1.
Explain the difference between justice, fairness, and equality in the scenario.
Justice in this scenario is seen as a judgement because another family member’s beliefs differ from another. Fairness would allow every family member to discuss their beliefs openly. If the family decides to honor one person’s holidays and not the other this will cause the remaining family members to experience a form discrimination. This is the total opposite of what fairness and justice stand for. Equality refers to each family member must be treated equally and receive any resources regardless of whether their holiday or cultural traditions are well known.
2.
Describe how bias can influence your perception of social justice in the scenario.
Unconscious or implicit bias may have caused a family member to assume or create their own narratives based on experience or lack of education of someone’s beliefs. At the gathering a family member could use this opportunity to share their own personal beliefs or traditions to persuade others.
3.
Describe how different narratives in society can impact your perception of social justice.
Today, there are so many outlets that affect our perception of social justice. Mainstream media, journals, peers just to name a few can cause our beliefs and attitudes from the influence. Stereotypes and prejudice can also form based on what we have allowed ourselves to be subject to. For example, social media apps such as Facebook, Instagram, and X allow everyone to express their opinions on subjects in the world. Depending on what is expressed can cause negative things to be said about certain groups. 4.
Describe the core principles of social justice in the scenario. Access to resources- All family members in regards of their socioeconomic status are subject to receiving equal access to resources.
Equity- Each family member should receive what they need, because equity determines how resources are distributed to groups of people. Participation- At the family gathering each member has the right to feel safe and use their voice and share their opinions. Diversity: Discrimination protects each family member regardless of race, color, age, and gender along with a few other categories.
Human Rights: All family members are deserving of Human rights. Social justice stands for all individuals not some.

1.
Describe how you would demonstrate cultural fluency in the scenario. (Complete this section in Module Three.)
In this scenario, cultural fluency encourages us to understand, communicate, and show interest in another person’s culture. Everyone must take account of their own behaviors and communicate to maintain a healthy conversation. Customs, beliefs, values, attitudes, and behaviors are all characteristics of cultural
fluency that a person can model after. For example, a family member or friend that is sharing their opinion on recent news may feel different than everyone else in the room. Though everyone will not agree, out of respect everyone still shows interest and learns about a different culture. 2.
Describe how cultural fluency benefits your self-awareness. (Complete this section in Module Three.)
Cultural fluency benefits my self-awareness every day, allowing by allowing me to better understand those around me who do not share the same beliefs. It convinces me to control my behavior and my beliefs on pause to listen and learn from others around me. Furthermore, each family member must make a choice to become aware of their own behavior so that no one is offended. A change in attitude could go a long way even if someone’s beliefs are different, it
helps us to gain a deeper understanding and sometimes show empathy. 3.
Describe how an awareness of other cultures can benefit interpersonal communication with people in the scenario. (Complete this section in Module Four.)
In this scenario awareness of other cultures will help interpersonal communication by learning what is acceptable and not acceptable in someone’s culture. Case in point, some things are a sign of disrespect. On a personal experience I had with the Hispanic culture while visiting their home. I was offered a drink and declined it, unaware that this is a sign of disrespect. So, when we begin to understand a different culture will prevent a misunderstanding. 4.
Describe how exposure to diverse backgrounds can positively influence communication in the scenario.
(Complete this section in Module Four.)
Bridging the gap will help understand diverse backgrounds of different cultures. Having a conversation will give access to individual differences and similarities. Further, at the holiday celebration each person deserves the right to explain their diverse backgrounds. Exposure to these types of conversations
will dismiss unconscious bias. 5.
Explain why an awareness of diversity is beneficial to collaboration in the scenario. (Complete this section in Module Four.)
Since diversity covers a wide range of categories, becoming more aware can be very beneficial. Learning to appreciate different morals, values, or beliefs of other cultures will allow us to accept things we may never have thought of. In fact, awareness will allow everyone to understand each other better, so that each person will feel valued and heard.
