Module 6 Putting it All Together:
The Role of Flight Planning in General Aviation Aircraft Accidents
On October 17, 2019 Pen Air Flight 3296 was a flight that was scheduled to fly from
Anchorage, Alaska to Amaknak Island.
The reports show that the Aircraft type that was used
was a Saab 200 and it had 42 occupants on board (39 Passengers & 3 Crew members). It was a
two hour and fifteen-minute flight.
Upon landing the aircraft overran the runway due to
unexpected wind changes that ultimately led to the investigation having a report of faulty
landing
gear and the judgement of the crew to land in a tailwind that exceeded its capabilities/limits.
Resulting in one fatality and twelve injuries (
Wikipedia, 2021).
Weather is a huge part of flight planning because it can constantly change.
This article ties
into the module because it highlights one huge aspect.
It shows how a planes velocity and an
unaccounted-for wind velocity can make a big difference in its resulted velocity if not calculated
properly.
In this case a tailwind increase that is not properly calculated for, can lead to
malfunction of gear and the aircraft overrun the runway.
Flight planning is a huge importance in aviation because it can be done before or even during
flight if anything changes.
Its main purpose is to ensure through your calculations that the fuel
you will have is enough for the trip and to ensure all get to the destination safely.
It contains all
information that is needed to make the flight possible as alternate airports in case of bad weather,
departure, as well as arrival points, Time the flight will take, type of flight and much more.
In
this case a decision was made that didn’t take into account a wind factor and it led to an aircraft
overrunning its runway, the aircraft to be damaged, and a fatality as well.
It seems like the flight
plan prior to departure was successful but once a change occurred that they were aware of upon
landing when wind changed and became a factor that was not calculated for before.
Made this
whole accident avoidable if precautionary measures and proper calculations were made for the
change in wind.
If the pilot knew more information about what aircraft they were operating and
was able to make changes upon landing there could have potentially been no incident.
