Chi-Square Test
The Redmond Child Protective Services wants to compare the effectiveness of two
programs provided to parents who were identified as being at risk for abusing or neglecting their
children. The parents either participated in a 10-week parenting course or 10 weeks of family
therapy sessions. The evaluator compared 50 parents who participated in the parenting course
and 45 parents who participated in the therapy program. The evaluator was looking at whether
the parents were suspected of abuse or neglect one year after completing services. The Redmond
local government is hesitant to invest in family therapy, as it is a much costlier service than a
parenting class.
1.
Conduct a chi-square test on the dataset to determine if one program had better outcomes than
the others. Include a copy of JASP output.

2.
Provide the result of the statistical analysis
. Was there a significant association between
type of program and subsequent status in the child welfare system?
Yes the value was .003 in the Chi-Squared Test above.
This is much smaller that our .05
cutoff, therefore the null hypothesis is rejected.
3.
Write a narrative
explaining the implications of the findings for future programming and
funding priorities. What are the potential limitations of the program evaluation results?

3
Family therapy may be a better treatment option for parents who are at risk to abuse or
neglect.
Funding should also be considered for this type of program rather than parenting
classes.
As for the main limitations of the program evaluation results, the main limitation is that
there was no pre-posttest, just a post-test study, which means that we cannot determine if the
family therapy treatment was actually effective in decreasing abuse or neglect, or whether it was
something else, like particular client characteristics of those who attended therapy versus
parenting classes.
Many other factors can contribute to the results of this test so this test is
ineffective and would need to be evaluated differently.
