ISEN210 Final Exam Review Problems – Fall 2023 You have decided that you enjoy school (and ISEN) so much that you will continue your education with Graduate School. You have decided on five schools as possible places to attend: Texas A&M University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Pennsylvania State University, Stanford University, and Virginia Polytechnic and State University. Your selection criteria includes: Metro area size, distance from home, student/faculty ratio, cost, enrollment size, school ranking. Please add any additional criteria you may want to evaluate. Explain any assumptions you make about criteria. Using the information below and your own knowledge base, create a PUGH chart for selection of the best school for you. Analyze and explain your process and results. If you feel one iteration of the PUGH chart is sufficient, your analysis should support that. Texas A&M Georgia Tech Penn State Stanford VA Tech Location College Station, TX Pop. 120,511 Atlanta, GA Pop. 498,715 State College, PA Pop. 40,501 Stanford, CA Pop. 21,150 Blacksburg, VA Pop. 44,826 Enrollment (Grad. 2 Develop a draft IDEF0 model, A0 and A1-A5 diagrams to characterize the basic steps that your project team performed in generating your business card holder (BCH) project design. You are free to use your own activities, though a few are suggested for your use below. Your team needs to characterize the functional decomposition in more detail (both the A0 and A1-A5 nodes). Using the information below and your knowledge of design using the *conceptual design* phase of the Engineering Design Process, produce a small IDEF0 function model to serve as a draft of the functional decomposition for your team’s project. Many of the studied artifacts, such as: Needs and Requirements Definition (NARD), customer surveys, House of Quality (HOQ), Activity on Arc (AOA), Pugh Chart, Weighted Design Matrix (WDM), CAD models are a few of the candidate artifacts that you might use as ICOMs in your characterization. Begin your analysis with statements of context/viewpoint/purpose. Context: Viewpoint: Purpose:
3 Your team is asked to design an operating table for a cardiovascular surgical unit at Houston Methodist. The figure shows the awkward posture of a surgeon with compromised neck, rounding at lower back, acute elbow-arm angle, and uneven weight distribution. Based on your knowledge in ergonomics and anthropometry, answer the questions below. (1) What should be the optimal posture of the surgeon while performing surgeries on an operating table for several hours? (2) Conceptualize an ergonomic operating table that enables the surgeon to perform surgery in an optimal posture. Please list the appropriate dimensions of the operating table, considering the obvious fact that surgeons can be both male and female. Body dimensions of US adult civilians is given on the next page for your reference.

5 You are an industrial engineer at Energy Conservation Services, and you found that the anticipated profitability of a newly developed water-heater temperature control device can be measured by present worth with the formula: NPW = 5X (3Y - 15) - (Z – 5000), where X is the number of units produced, Y is the sales price per unit, and Z is the cost basis. The CEO of Energy Conservation Services mentioned that they made an initial investment (Z) of $25,000. The estimated most likely values for X and Y are 200 units and $20, respectively. The CEO wants to explore how sensitive NPW is towards X and Y. a) Calculate NPW by changing X and Y by -10%, -5%, 5% and 10% each, and complete the table below. Key input parameters NPW as a function of % deviation from the most likely estimates -10% -5% 0% (Base) 5% 10% Units Produced Unit Price b) From the table identify which variable affects NPW more and explain your answer.
6 Your design team is setting up the production system for your customized business card holder (from 3D printing to packaging). As lead engineer you are required to deliver a FMEA section as part of the process specification. In the FMEA chart below (part a) fill in the requisite data for two possible failure modes of your process and answer the question (part b) regarding design for manufacturing. a) FMEA chart completion Application Function Failure mode Effects Causes S E V O C C D E T RPN b) For each of the failure modes you’ve identified, identify at least 1 principle we discussed related to good design for manufacturing that will address the failure mode.
