Stream Lab, EES-152 Final data analysis Answer the following questions using the compiled class dataset. Be sure to report relevant statistics and identify the test you performed in support of your answer if relevant . 1. Was there a significant difference in macroinvertebrate diversity between the two locations? Use and report the Shannon diversity index in your answer. a. Yes. The Lehigh Canal had a Shannon diversity of 1.41 and Monocacy Creek had a Shannon diversity of 2. Both locations had a high diversity of macroinvertebrates but Monocacy Creek was much higher. 2. Make rank-abundance plots to visually support your answer to number #1, with the data from both sites plotted on the same graph (use the average abundance values for each site). a. 3. Calculate the Hilsenoff biotic index using each group’s data at the two sites (i.e., this should result in 5 index values for each site). Calculate the average biotic index value for each site using the values obtained from the five groups’ data. Was there a significant difference between the two sites? Interpret the biotic index values (i.e., what do they tell us about water quality at the two locations), and develop potential explanations for the difference or lack of difference. a. Yes, Monocacy Creek had a slightly lower biotic index. This means that Monocacy Creek is a healthier habitat than Lehigh Canal.
