Discuss the individual contributions that could be made by a cross-functional team to the following list of
activities. Assume the team consists of engineering, manufacturing, and supply management personnel.
a. Specifications Development
b. Market Analysis
c. Productivity/cost improvements
d. Make or buy analysis.
e. Determination of inventory levels
In this week’s discussion, I feel that anyone who has served in the military (at a minimum, the Navy)
should be able to relate to this topic very well. As a maintenance manager, who works side by side with a
supply team, operations teams, and engineers everyday and not to mention that these individuals are
from all over the country with very diverse backgrounds, I see the advantages that this diversity brings to
our teams and overall mission accomplishment. With proper management and leadership following
efficient processes we have discovered that we can be an unstoppable force for success in the Navy.
Now to answer the questions in the discussion I will break down how the teams will contribute to the
apparent departments below.
Specifications Development:
Engineering Team:
In most of the departments they will provide their technical knowledge eon
the products and in this area the development will rely highly on their expertise in distinguishing
specifications and ensuring that they meet all the wickets required.
Manufacturing Team:
They will provide insight into the most efficient way to produce the
product to ensure it aligns with the equipment and technology used to develop the product.
Supply Management:
This team will be providing all the information on costs and availability of
the materials needed to develop the product and ensure they remain within the specifications and
budget for development.
Market Analysis:
Engineering Team:
This team can provide any technical updates that may assist in keeping the
most up to date technology that will coincide with the current market to help keep the company relevant
and competitive.
Manufacturing Team:
This team can provide any insight from the production to align with the
goal of meeting market demands.
Supply Management:
Alike the manufacturing team, they can also provide insight to align with
the goals of meeting market demands.
Productivity/Cost Improvements:
Engineering Team:
This team can provide any improvements or updates to the design and layout
of the product that may lead to pr be a result of customer demand and in turn affect the cost and
productivity of the product.
Manufacturing Team:
This team can find inefficiencies and continuously improve to be cost
effective.
Supply Management:
This team can continuously identify and research new ways to cut cost by
finding new suppliers or ways to adjust their current terms with suppliers to increase cost effectiveness.
Make or Buy Analysis:
Engineering Team:
Determine whether the company could make these products in-house and
the difficulty and involvedness of what that process entails.
Manufacturing Team:
Work alongside the engineers and determine the complexity of making
products in house versus buying and the short-term vs long term effects.
Supply Management:
Provide data to forecast the additional materials and costs need to support
making product in house versus buying.
Determination of Inventory Levels:
Engineering Team:
This team can provide any insight into specific materials that may require
longer times to assess and work alongside supply and the manufacturing team to identify any issues.
Manufacturing Team:
Also provide insight and data on production times and an influencing
factor that will impact increasing or decreasing inventory levels.
Supply Management:
This team can ensure that deliveries are secure and reliable to ensure that
materials are on time and will not impact production development.
In my experience in the Navy, all these departments and areas have their own individual responsibilities
but will be required to work in parallel with one another to maintain optimal effectiveness. It is
imperative to have a smooth flowing process with maximum communication to tie it all together.
