2 HAZMAT Training for the Galley Crew Onboard a Navy Ship --on-the-job & off-the-job training The types of training for HAZMAT in the galley will be determined by the ship platform whether it is an aircraft carrier that carries 3,000 members or a DDG which is a very small ship that can carry around 300 members. There are certain chemicals that cannot be used in different areas of the ship or offshore such as emptying trash off the coast or even dumping contaminated toilet water over the side polluting the ocean since it contains all kinds of items that have been burned or shredded. Handling HAZMAT materials onboard a Navy ship in the galley is an important aspect in regarding safety and knowing what kind of chemicals personnel are working with. When Culinary Specialists check-in onboard a ship regardless of the size, they attend orientation regarding on-the-job training since it is very important, especially working with dangerous equipment, materials, and other items that can potentially cause great harm such as poisoning or even death. “Naval Supply Systems Command serves as the lead organization for all logistics support functions associated with the Navy's Pollution Prevention and Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) Control and Management Programs (Mohri et al., 2022)”. “The main focus of training activities is to improve work competence in order to meet work needs effectively. Training activities that are planned and adapted to professional needs are part of career development (Yanthy et al., 2023)”. On the job training for HAZMAT training will consist of daily meetings during lunch breaks due to everyone being available at the same time and in the same area. This will include hands on training with the materials and all gear that is required, demonstrating opening, or applying the chemicals such as paint or oil, and supervising another Sailor to make sure they understand the severity of the chemicals and if they can follow proper directions. Another portion of the training is to take tests weekly to see if Sailors are
3 HAZMAT Training for the Galley Crew Onboard a Navy Ship retaining the information that is being taught and shown to them while having a Personnel Qualification Standard card (PQS) signed off once they reiterate what they learned. Off-the-job training will occur during the galley crew’s down time such as being off work, while underway or on personal time once other job tasks have been completed. When the ship is in port there are several classes that personnel can attend to receive a better understanding of how, what, when, and where HAZMAT should be utilized without making any significant errors. Depending on the number of Culinary Specialist working in the galley will determine how many members can attend trainings without being short of staffed. This will help in Sailors being motivated to attend training that is outside of work and free to learn rather than having to study resources on their off time when they have the option to attend courses that apply to HAZMAT. All Culinary Specialist will learn about every single machine they will use in the galley, how to break them down, and how to clean them correctly for the next shift or for inspections. The off-job training will be mandatory for all personnel working in the galley regardless if they are enlisted or an officer because everyone in the organization must understand all of the applicable protocols. Some Sailors prefer to take advantage of this granted extra time by getting out of work and going to courses to learn different skills and applying those skills in the courses and when they return to work in the galley. The courses will train Culinary Specialists on properly using and noticing the different versions of HAZMAT whether its paint, cooking materials, or anything of that nature. Anyone in an organization wants to understand the importance of what they are learning and why, so it is important that Culinary Specialists are confident when they have to deal with HAZMAT in the galley due to them working in a hot environment. Being away from the ship can lessen distractions because personnel are not worried or focused on other tasks they

4 HAZMAT Training for the Galley Crew Onboard a Navy Ship need to work on and complete in order to go home for the day. This makes it easier and takes stress off their shoulders when they can be completely focused on what they need to know and not worried about work and what they might have to catch up on. --technology used The technology that will be utilized is computers, virtual reality, HAZMAT manuals and instructions, standard operating procedures, proctors, classroom training with videos, advice and experience from workers who have utilized HAZMAT materials for over five years. The advice and experience portion will get briefed over Zoom or Teams with NAVSUP to provide major insight for inspections as well as teaching everyone how important HAZMAT really is. Some issues will occur when being on a ship that is out to sea due to connectivity being extremely limited or not having a strong signal to utilize internet services so that is where experience and instructions come into play. “Virtual reality refers to an experience in which users are presented with stimuli – usually visual and auditory that a gen erated by computers as visual content is displayed (Chen et al., 2023)”. The Culinary Specialist can choose the best training method that they feel will assist in the long run. Virtual reality games can be administered since they will be stored on the share drive and are still accessible even without the internet. This is a method that everyone in the galley can receive teachings that are not in a traditional manner while being hands-on training at the same time. This virtual reality aspect can motivate and give confidence to any Culinary Specialists who are uncomfortable with demonstrating in large settings. When the ship is in port training will vary from having a meeting every morning, attending mandatory virtual trainings online, and providing teach backs where students become the teacher and the teacher becomes a student to compare teaching methods. This way leadership can track and notice who needs continuous
5 HAZMAT Training for the Galley Crew Onboard a Navy Ship training in various aspects of HAZMAT or who has enough knowledge and skills to provide one on one training for the galley crew. --delivery methods The galley crew would be informed that the training is self-paced and not rushed so they have control over their own learning, provides feedback on areas and overall progress on the lesson, can be done at home and not only at work, and how the new training saves time and money. They will also be informed that some of the training is computer-based training courses that is available in different forms to better understand the content regarding HAZMAT. “One significant advantage of the virtual classroom learning method over traditional instructor-led learning is that it can be delivered and attended from anywhere and learners can still directly interact with the instructor (Gupta, 2023)’. --transfer of training Transfer of training will occur anytime a member is getting ready to transfer, separate, transfer, go on leave, or will be out of work for more than a week. This will allow everyone who works in the galley to stay up to date with any changes or to maintain consistency on using HAZMAT. “Transfer of training is the extent that learning from training transfers from the training room and is applied to the job, consequently improving the trainee’s performance (Jones et al., 2023)“. In the galley will be a list that is maintained to inform everyone who will be leaving and when they are transferring to a new command so that a proper turnover occurs. There will also be standard operating procedures that are posted in several areas in the galley to assist with any questions and how to fix any equipment in case the person who’s are of expertise is on leave and not reachable.
