Multiple Choice
1. According to the text, a team-based task where team members are trained to demonstrate very
little information sharing and no coordination of task expertise would be exhibiting which aspect
of team behavior?

High Discrimination
b)
Low Discrimination
c)
High Integration
d)
Low Integration
2.
According to text and lecture, which statement is most true about qualitative and independent
variables?
a)
Qualitative variables cannot be used as levels of independent variables
b
)
Qualitative variables describe independent conditions differing in kind
c)
Independent variables can only have qualitative conditions to be valid
d)
Independent variables depend on changes in qualitative variable levels
3.
In some course evaluation surveys at Purdue, students answer questions based on a 5- or 7-
point scale ranging from “Strongly disagree” to “Strongly agree.” This is an example of what
type of scaling?
a)
Nominal Scale
b)
Ratio Scale
c)
Likert Scale
d)
Qualitative Scale
4.
Fitts’ Law (RT = a + b* (2D/W)) describes elements of cognitive and physical response
during a control task.
Which of the following terms best describes the meaning of D?
a
)
Distance to target
b)
Time required to act
c)
Distraction due to noise
d)
Relative target size

5. A child is assembling a LEGO kit and forgets to do the steps on one of the pages in the
instruction manual. According to Swain’s THERP model, this is what type of error?
a)
Commission
b)
Omission
c)
Sequence
d)
Timing
6.
A common scale used in emergency rooms is the pain scale, where a patient will rate their
pain from 1 (no pain at all) to 10 (the worst pain imaginable).
This pain scale is an example of
what kind of variable?
a) Subjective, qualitative
b) Objective, qualitative
c) Subjective, quantitative
d) Objective, quantitative
7.
A golf team competes in a tournament.
The overall score of the team at the end of the
tournament is the sum of the scores of the individual team members.
Based on this description,
what kind of team scoring is being used in this golf tournament?
a)
Aggregation
b)
Coordination
c)
Interdependent
d)
Supervisory
8.
An engineer measuring illumination in a classroom during a regular class period (assumed
lighting levels ~500 lux) reports the lighting at six different locations in the room as 4850, 4849,
4852, 4850, 4851, and 4850 lux.
How should we describe these lighting measures?
a)
Neither reliable nor valid
b)
Reliable, but not valid
c)
Valid, but not reliable
d)
Both reliable and valid
Short Answers
1.
Describe the difference between independent and dependent variables.
Is it possible to
have an independent, subjective, and qualitative variable?
If not, why not?
If so, give an
example.
6-7 points for: Independent variables are ones we expect to influence observations of some
phenomenon.
Dependent variables are those that we believe will differ in those observations,
due to influence of independent.
(extra if cause or correlation mentioned).
Yes, you can have
IN, SU, QUAL: (example) preferred vs non-preferred food influence on mood or test
performance.

2.
Briefly explain the concept of Simplified English.
Why, from an information processing
perspective, would Simplified English be helpful in improving the task performance of
both native- and non-native English speakers?
6-7 points: SE is a reduced version of English where fewer words are used, each word has only
one meaning. (Extra if “controlled vocabulary” used).
Since fewer words are used, and less
ambiguity in meaning, even native speakers can access, recall, and process information faster
with less error.
3.
Explain why, according to the lectures and the textbook, pilot testing of questionnaires
and surveys is important in systematic data collection.
Poorly written or biased questions are useless, because the data are not systematic or valid.
Pilot
testing allows researcher to identify problems (6 points for answer up to here), including
unexpected confusions, misunderstandings, or misinterpretation (extra if more than two listed).
4.
Explain the difference between reliability and validity within a scientific and systematic
approach to data collection.
Provide an example of a measurement being reliable but not
valid.
6-7 points for: Reliability is consistent, repeatable measure of phenomenon being studied so that
there is confidence in score.
Validity is that the measure is a good representation of what the
phenomenon really is.
Example: electronic thermometer or thermocouple stuck at 80F degrees
due to fault, but real temp is >500F (happened in Apollo 13) (Extra if also noting MC 8 is an
example)
5.
Multiple choice question 5 above addresses the question of a child assembling a LEGO
kit.
According to lecture, is it the same type of error if the child intentionally decides not
to use one of the pages of the instruction manual?
Why or why not?
6 points: No, it’s not the same type of error, because intent was to do something other than
procedure indicates.
Extra 1-2 to indicate Reason’s VIOLATION.

ESSAY (do not exceed the space on this page)
Describe the concept of function allocation.
How does this concept relate to the concept of
human supervisory control?
How is function allocation between humans and automation
similar/different to that between humans and humans in an organizational design and
management paradigm of supervisory control?
16-17 point answers address the following:
Function Allocation (FA) talks about who does what, when, and examines who is good at what,
and what is safer / better / more efficient from an overall or integrated system perspective.
This
could be applied to humans as well as automation (when humans controlling automation that can
repeatably do action, this can be described as human supervisory control {HSC}), because it’s
still separating who is doing what in task.
Organizational design and management (ODAM)
addresses general aspects of who has what responsibility and how jobs performed at broader
work analysis (not just narrow level of focused task under ideal conditions), including safety and
health, work schedules, pace and pay.
ODAM is not just manager taking advantage of worker
(points taken off if answer suggests that F. Taylor or L. Gilbreth intended scientific management
to be a negative ODAM approach to FA or HSC)
Extra points for mentioning Fitts’ HABA / MABA; Sheridan and levels of automation; command
and control – span of control; recognition of Hawthorne or Tavistock influences on ODAM
studies of social interactions or sociotechnical adoption affecting FA or HSC.
