Purpose of a Statement of
Need in a Grant Proposal
Characteristics of an
Effective Statement of Need
Pitfalls to Avoid When
Writing a Statement of Need
The purpose of a statement of
need in a grant proposal is to
justify the organization’s
request for funds. A need
statement should define the
problem being addressed,
describe the implications of
the problem, and identify the
gaps in the community
(GrantsEdge, 2017). Also
referred to as a problem
statement, it should clearly
establish the program’s
rationale for solving the issue
in a specific community.
While preparing a statement
of need, the organization must
remain focused on the core
concerns of the problem,
present unmistakable data and
profound personal stories, and
introduce a sense of urgency if
not handled (GrantsEdge,
2017). An effective need
statement should be succinct,
all encompassing, and explicit.
When writing a statement of
need, the organization should
avoid making circular
arguments as the funder likely
will not find this compelling
enough. It is also important to
remember to insert recent,
relevant, and local statistics to
resonate logically with the
funder, while emphasizing the
gravity of the problem’s
impact on real people.
