LE/CIVL 3260 TRANSPORTATION PLANNING AND EVALUATION ASSIGNMENT #01 UNDERSTANDING TRANSPORTATION MASTER PLAN Due Date: February 06, 2024 (Tuesday, by 11:59 pm) Question # 1 Understanding Transportation Master Plan INTRODUCTION The purpose of assignment #01 is to enhance your skills in searching and critically reviewing the transportation master plans (TMPs) developed by cites and regional municipalities in Greater Golden Horseshoe Area (GGH). Deliverable: a “five-page memorandum” summarizing following tasks. For that, use one of the memorandum templates in the following website. https://templates.office.com/en-ca/memos 1.
Search the most recent two electronic (e.g., PDF or HTML) TMPs published on-line by cities and regional municipalities in GGH area that are associated with the address of your current residence or any where in the GGH area. For instance, if you are currently living in a residence in Brampton, search and use 1) the City of Brampton’s TMP and 2) the Regional Municipality of Peel’s TMP for this assignment. If you are living in Toronto, use 1) the City of Toronto’s TMP and 2) the Regional Municipality of York’s TMP for this assignment (since Toronto is not belonged to any of the regional municipalities). If you are not familiar with the regional municipality of your city, see the following website. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_municipalities_in_the_Greater_Toronto_Area https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Horseshoe Note clearly that you do not need to disclose your residence address for this exercise. 2.
CIVL 3260 Lectures # 1 and 2, titled “Long Range Transportation Planning & Land Use” shows the following seven typical steps for a long-range transportation planning process: 1) Problem definition
2
2) Define goals, objectives, and criteria 3) Data collection 4) Forecasts 5) Develop alternatives 6) Evaluations 7) Implementation plan Based on the two TMP reviews, provide brief summary of each step listed above explained in each TMP; i.e., state the actions that a city or a region was undertaking for each step in its TMP. Note that a certain city’s or municipality’s TMP would not include all of the steps listed above. If this is the case for your city’s and/or region’s TMP, provide only the brief summary of the steps included in the searched TMP. Summarize the seven steps separately for the two TMPs. Please refer to the MTO’s Greater Golden Horseshoe Multi-modal Plan and Metrolinx Regional Transportation Plan and show their connections with the TMP. 3.
See slides in CIVL 3260 Lectures # 1 and 2 note titled “Long Range Transportation Planning & Land Use” that contains typical outputs (deliverables) in a TMP.
List all deliverables (e.g., list items associated with 1) network improvement plan, 2) transit plan, and so on) in the two TMPs. List deliverables separately for each TMP.
Provide the top three most important deliverables in each TMP in a more detailed format. You can select and use maps/tables showing detailed transit plan (if this is one of the three most important deliverables) in a TMP. 4.
Provide “critical review” of the two TMPs according to your travel experience in the city or region. State “strength” (e.g., something that you agree on the future plans in TMP.) and “weakness” (something that you want to add in addition to the plans stated in TMP) for each TMP. Delivery Format 1.
Your document should be a “five-page” document (Use letter size paper, Times New Roman, font size 11 and 1.5-line spacing). 2.
You can include maximum “four” supporting figures or tables (e.g., you can use two figures or tables from each TMP). 3.
State clearly the two TMP references.

Question # 2 Please review York University Secondary Plan with a focus on transportation and land use planning. You are advised to review Sections 1, 2, 3 and 5.2 and also refer to Maps 10.1 to 10. 12 in greater detail. Please prepare a short critical review of the transportation aspects, gaining insight from your planning and engineering perspective as to whether this Plan is meeting student and University needs as far as transportation and land uses are concerned. Your critical review and observations document should be limited to two-pages. Assignment Submission: Your first assignment in total will consist of total of 7 pages
– 5 pages for Question 1 and 2 pages for Question 2.
You are encouraged to be as succinct as possible.
Please use good mix of bullets and paragraphs for conveying your information to make the assignment easy and pleasant to read. Develop a PDF (File Name should be “
Assignment01_Your Student Number
”) and submit it to the course website (Eclass). Please note: This is an open-ended assignment with no single answer. I am expecting a wide variety of findings, opinions, and conclusions even for students living in a same city
for Question 1 and same applies to Question # 2. Feel free to contact the course instructor (Dr. Sabbir Saiyed) or TAs should you require further clarification.
