You may need to refer back to your learning resource. 1. What inspections are made to instruments prior to packing? Inspections on instruments must be carried out prior to packing these inspections include: - Instruments have no residue, be clean and dry and be in good working order - all parts must be present if instruments have multi parts, should be undamaged and meet specifications. 2. What are the basic principles that apply for tray assembly? Once the instruments have been cleaned and inspected they should be taken apart or opened to allow for full penetration. Trays should be packed left to right and following a packing list. All trays should be perforated to allow steam penetration and drying. 3. There are two main wrapping techniques used to wrap instruments in SSD what are they? The 2 main wrapping techniques are the envelope or diagonal method and the square or horizontal method. Care should be taken to ensure the folds are correctly placed with no openings for contamination to occur. 4. Apart from the contents on the tray what other information should be on the outside of a wrapped tray? The other important information on the outside of each pack should be: - date of sterilisaton - cycle or load number - steriliser number -expiry date 5. A heat sealer is used to seal what type of packaging material? paper bags and flexible packing materials usually for single instruments. 6. What is the appropriate attire to wear in the packing area? Appropiate attire for the packing area would be a clean uniform/scrubs, hair should be completely covered, no jewellery, false nails or nail polish. 7. What is an illuminated magnifier light used for? Some instruments are too small to check throughly with the naked eye so an illuminated magnifyer would need to be used. 8. What documentation needs to be completed with tray? 9. How do we protect fine delicate or sharp instruments? a steam permeable tip protector would need to be used to protect fine or sharp instruments. 10. What does priority processing mean? priority processing is organising and sterilising equipment on a first need basis. By following the surgical schedule for that day it will allow you to know when they need trays back and if it becomes priority to run a cycle with the required trays first. 11. What is quality documentation? Quality documentation ensures quality standards are met, is accurate, minimises error and allows quick access to all data. 12. When inspecting wraps prior to use you are ensuring they are what? That the wraps arent damaged or soiled, have not been affected by insects or vermin, show any signs of wetness, are not dusty, they have the use by date and are suitable for the intended use and show no signs of contamination. 13. What packaging materials would you use to pack single items? Paper or plastic single pouches are designed for steam penetration and it allows easy access to see inside. A 25mm space is left at the top for heat sealing and allows extra space for opening. 14. Inspection of reusable container systems is necessary prior to use. They need to be inspected to ensure that; They are clean and undamaged, the lid gasket is in good working order and in its right place and the filter holding mechanism is functioning and present. 15. Storage for packaging materials requires what type of conditions? Packaging materials should be stored in a well ventilated area that provides protection against dust, moisture, insects and fluroescent or ultraviolet light. Stored items should be checked before use to ensure they havent been compromised in anyway. Part b – Scenario 1 Susan works in the sterilizing department and, is rostered to work in the packaging area. Before Susan starts to pack the trays of instruments What will she have to do? In your answer consider firstly her personal hygiene and secondly, the packaging area.
