Introduction
In this experiment we will be using an air track set up (includes 1 air track, 1 large cart with flag, and 1 small cart with flag) and 2 photogate setups to carry out a variety of collisions and observe the conservation of momentum and energy that occur.
Procedure: Part I: Preliminary Setup and Measurements
1.
Level the air track
2.
Open the LoggerPro file “ConservationofMomentum” and connect the two photogates
3.
Measure the mass of the carts and the width of both the carts’ flags. (propagate for uncertainty)
4.
Place the cars on the air track and adjust the photogates so that the flags intercept the sensors.
5.
Identify and take note of which photogate is photogate 1 and which is photogate 2. 6.
Follow the following diagrams for the next parts (part II – part IV)
Part II/III/IV: Coliding Two Carts
7.
Starting with part II, next with part III, and lastly with part IV, follow the respective schematics on how to position the carts and the photogates.

8.
On the computer press “start collection”, wait a second, and carryout the collision when recording
has started.
9.
Push the cart outside the photogate lightly towards the center making sure to let go before the cart
begins crossing the photogate.
10.
The carts will collide, make sure to catch them before they bounce back.
