Project Management Simulation: Scope, Resources, Schedule V3
1.
Complete the simulation online
. There is a fee (approx. $15) will require a credit card.
2.
Remember to SAVE screenshots
of each of the three (3) scenarios you run. Your personal analysis/reflections are more important than the actual simulation scores, but I need to see the graphs, scores, and results. Note: You will be able to run each scenario three times
(MAX) to improve your scenario score and performance. Include the final/best three scenario runs in your final report
.
3.
Write a report that includes
: A cover sheet, A brief statement of the simulation, the assignment instructions (
this entire list
) i.e.: copy and paste the list into your report;
the result of each scenario with SCREENSHOTS of results
(large enough to read); your reflections and insights gained from the exercise. Place everything in a single PDF document and upload
.
In this simulation, I assumed the disaster response project manager role at Romero Humanitarian Relief Services, overseeing the development of a new relief initiative within specified parameters, mainly focusing on Scenario A. The targets for Scenario A were to achieve a Level 2 scope, encompassing "Food relief, temporary housing, field hospital, and reinforcement/repair of the sanitation infrastructure." The project was to be
completed within a timeline of 18 weeks and a budget of $42,500. These were based on
roughly similar situations “my organization” has dealt with in the past. This scenario was
repeated three times, each iteration presenting unique challenges related to meeting these targets. As the project manager, my responsibilities included decision-making on the composition and expertise of the project team, determining the frequency of meetings, and setting expectations for project schedules and deliverables. Throughout each repetition of Scenario A, meticulous budget monitoring was crucial. The following snapshots capture the outcomes and decisions made in each iteration of Scenario A:

What did you learn
from completing the simulation? What should you have done differently? Discuss your insight on how you improved
on each run of the scenarios.
Throughout the three repetitions of Scenario A, I gained valuable insights into setting realistic expectations and strategically prioritizing project objectives. The inherent challenges of surpassing or even meeting all project goals— encompassing project scope, schedule, and budget—became evident. It became clear that achieving excellence in one area meant making compromises in others. Consequently, a meticulous review of the project scope and objectives was imperative between every iteration. It guided me in determining the primary focus and priority for each distinct scenario, ultimately enabling me to achieve a Level 3 scope within 19 weeks at a cost of
$46,855 on my last attempt.
A noteworthy observation was the differing weight assigned to each objective for every scenario, prompting me to tailor my priorities accordingly. While navigating through these challenges, especially in handling the project schedule, I became aware of the potential long-term repercussions of my decisions. The project team's well-being became a top concern, recognizing that an unrealistic target schedule could lead to stress and reduced productivity. Therefore, I leaned towards prioritizing the 18-week schedule over the proposed budget, understanding its pivotal role in shaping team dynamics.
Consistently, in every scenario, I guaranteed the accomplishment of the project scope, deeming it the fundamental pillar of project success. As I progressed through each iteration, the significance of establishing a robust and competent team from the outset became increasingly apparent. Optimal team size proved essential not only for timely project completion but also for ensuring the qualifications of team members. Choosing higher-quality team members proved beneficial, reducing the need for extensive training
and lowering the chances of errors and schedule setbacks. This strategic approach boosted efficiency and minimized the need for ample weekly meetings to manage a larger team.

What project management topics or principles that you learned
in the classroom and text have helped you the most
in completing the simulation and why? Your narrative should target 500+ words.
One of the essential principles I gained from this class, particularly relevant to Professor
Zapalla's emphasis, was the crucial role of communication, relationships within a project
team, and the purpose of meetings. Understanding that team morale and focus significantly impact productivity and work quality, I recognized the importance of listening and learning from team members with diverse insights into project logistics for this simulation. Consequently, the team process rating was critical to my project decisions and the amount and type of meetings I required.
Regarding project monitoring and diverse meeting formats, I regularly evaluated the team's morale by reviewing comments and feedback each week. This information played a crucial role in guiding subsequent decisions. This approach ensured the maintenance of a realistic and manageable target schedule, balancing the need for regular meetings to sustain team focus and productivity. Actively managing different meeting types and closely monitoring their impact on the team dynamics, I aimed to optimize the project's progress. Sustaining high team morale played a substantial role in
positively influencing my overall score. In the final scenario, I tested this hypothesis. Excessive demands on the team while providing adequate support had positive consequences, and the subsequent impact on my score validated this theory. I achieved a Level 3 scope by going over schedule and budgets by only one week and $605 while keeping good morale within the team.
