Video Homework CHAPTER 13 - Chewy
Summarize Chewy’s strategy for growth as described by the CEO, Sumit Singh in the
video and how should that guide any system and application development decisions they
make.
-
Chewy CEO Sumit Singh clarifies that what they provide is not a need, it's a WANT.
Stating the success of Chewy and the position it holds against other longstanding pet
stores demonstrates the true success of Chewy with its strategies, services, private brands
and customer support. The company continually stands as a platform that caters to “Pet
Parents” expanding on services, food, pet care, medicine, supplies and live animals.
Aside from that, another huge aspect that grows the company is their customer service.
Any decisions in application development should focus on the customer and highlighting
the services they provide. This will keep the growth and will continue to expand as the
one stop shop for pets.
Given the direction for growth and the ability to develop services in the veterinary space,
what can Chewy do in requirements gathering to ensure their website and back office
systems will support users?
-
Extensive research and planning is needed to ensure that their systems and website will
support users. Chewy needs to identify needs, wants, top sellings items, services to pick
up on as well as the items and services to stay away from. This whole process of
supporting the users is simply finding what attracts pet parents and what will make them
stay. A key aspect that was highlighted in the video was Chewy's customer service and its
goal of becoming the one stop shop for all pet needs. Once Chewy gets around to
providing it all, as well as a subscription - the outstanding customer service will keep
loyal customers and many others returning.
Based on the nature of Chewy’s business, will they be able to rely on existing software to
deliver successfully on their business strategy, or should they develop custom solutions?
Support your answer with clear rationale.
-
Chewy’s model on providing pet products, live animals, services and expanding into
medicine might not have an ideal software. This business has a goal of becoming the
ultimate one stop shop and due to this it is best that Chewy opts for a custom made
software specifically for all that they provide. This will allow Chewy to fully customize
and differentiate themselves from all the other pet suppliers in the market. At the
moment, Chewy is known as the place to shop for pets as it offers more than traditional
pet stores in terms of products and services, so it is in the best interest that Chewy
remains different with their own software that is unlike any other. This gives Chewy the
opportunity to focus on their best selling points and make them stand out with their
software.
Despite the excitement of an initial public offering and becoming publicly traded, what
pressure does Chewy now face? How might that impact their approach to systems
development and quality of deployment?
-
As a publicly traded company, Chewy now faces more pressure to keep growing and
profitability so that shareholder value remains. Moving forward Chewy will increase
caution and increase research when making any decisions for the company as they now
have investors in the company. Any wrong move or bad decision can have a huge impact.
Chewy now makes decisions for the company itself and its investors. In terms of system
development, Chewy will have to do extensive research, and possibly trials to ensure
what applications they will take on is a good and profitable fit for the company.
