HIS 100 Module One Activity Template: Project Topic Exploration You must pick a topic from the Research Topics Lists in the Library Research Guide. While it is a good idea to choose your topic early, you may change it until the next module. Replace the bracketed text below with your responses. Support your responses with specific details and examples. Identify the topic you chose to explore: Climate change: Chernobyl Disaster Explain what you already know about the chosen topic based on your personal history or experiences. The Chernobyl Disaster took place in 1986 in Ukraine, which was then a part of the Soviet Union. It happened at a power plant. Resulted in an explosion and fire. As a result, a large amount of material was released into the environment causing consequences for the surrounding area and its inhabitants. The Chernobyl Disaster is widely regarded as one of the worst nuclear accidents in history and significantly impacted human health and the environment. Furthermore, it increased the risk of cancer and other medical conditions for those exposed to radiation. Describe the beliefs, assumptions, and values you have related to the topic you chose. As an individual who highly values the sanctity of life and the overall welfare of individuals, I see Chernobyl as a tragedy that caused immense suffering to thousands. Governments need to make sure communities impacted by catastrophes are safe and secure. Explain why this topic is relevant to current events or to modern society. The accident was a reminder of the dangers that come with nuclear power. It led to changes in safety protocols and regulations in the industry and it continues to shape discussions on the risks and benefits of nuclear energy today. The term environmental impact of the Chernobyl Disaster, such as land and water contamination, has made people more aware of the need for clean energy options. This event has also sparked conversations about the importance of transitioning to renewable energy sources to minimize the risks associated with accidents and decrease carbon emissions. 1
