Wylie 1 Natalie Wylie Ms. Majumder HIST 2301 03 Nov. 2023 The Use of The Atomic Bombs The first atomic bombs to be used against humans were dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the United States on August 6 and August 9, 1945. An estimated 140,000 people had perished in Hiroshima and another 74,000 in Nagasaki as a result of the attack by the end of 1945. Contributing to the conclusion of World War II, the questions linger by Samuel J. Walker whether using the bomb at all was necessary, and if so, what did it accomplish? Like Samuel J. Walker, I believe that the use of the bomb was not at all necessary. In the book, Prompt and Utter Destruction, Samuel J. Walker states, “There were other options available for ending the war within a reasonably short time without the bomb and without an invasion” (Walker, 5). Walker argues that the use of atomic bombs did not address any problems because the war would have ended regardless, as this quote makes evident. If the United States had promised that Emperor Hirohito was able to maintain his throne, Japan would have been prepared to submit and the deployment of the bombs could have been averted. With the Soviet invasion of Manchuria, this would provoke the surrender and compliance of Japan, rather than the deployment of the atomic bombs. From reading the information and evidence I gathered above, you can observe how the war would have ended with a promise of the emperor retaining his throne and the invasion of Manchuria, even in the absence of the use of atomic bombs.
Wylie 2 With President Truman's approval, the launch of atomic bombs compelled and successfully accomplished Japan's surrender in World War II. However, using this weapon resulted in the death of civilians as well as radioactive fallout from the atomic bomb, a terrible outcome that US authorities weren't prepared for. The United States sparked the nuclear arms race when it dropped the atomic bombs, sending a message to the rest of the world that it regarded nuclear weapons as acceptable tools of war. You can observe the true accomplishments of the atomic bombs use by reading the evidence I gathered above. In conclusion, Samuel J. Walker and I agree that the use of the atomic bombs resulted in massive misery and death for the Japanese and was presumably a crime against humanity or genocide. We additionally believe that the use of atomic bombs was not at all required to win the war. Works Cited Walker, J. Samuel.
