HIS 100 Module Four Activity Template: Historical Narratives Locate an additional secondary source relevant to your historical event. Use all four of your sources (two primary and two secondary) to answer the questions below. Replace the bracketed text with your responses. Identify the topic you chose to explore: Wounded Knee Occupation Attempt to write the APA style citations for your four sources. Include links to each source. You will not be penalized for incorrect citation format. Sarro, R. (1973). Sioux Faces Hill Probers Is Adamant. The Evening Star and Daily News , A-9 Johansen, Bruce (2022). Wounded Knee Occupation. Salem Press Encyclopedia , p2 D’Arcus, B. (2003). Contested Boundaries: native sovereignty and state power at Wounded Knee, 1973 . Political Geography p415-437 Douglas, M. (2020, 08 17). The Origins of the American Indian Movement and the Wounded Knee Occupation: A History of Liberation and Defiance . Retrieved from American Indian Republic: https://americanindianrepublic.com/the-origins-of-the-american-indian-movement-and-the- wounded-knee-occupation-a-history-of-liberation-and-defiance/ Compare the narratives presented in your primary and secondary sources relevant to your historical event. Sarro’s article really showed me how unfair the justice system was towards Native American’s. In his article he quests several marshals and politicians from the American government who seem dumbfounded as to why this is happening. Or perhaps they were just in a biased denial that there was anything wrong. With D’Arcus’s article he takes on a social perspective and really shows the reasoning behind when and why. Douglas’s article he combines the social perspective with the events and really brings into light why Wounded knee was a big deal and how they “stoked the fires” of the press and media. Through each different narrative and how they seen the event and their biased they bring about different angles of the same event. You get a more complete picture of the social impact and issues by looking at these different sources.
Describe one narrative that has significantly influenced the contemporary understanding of your historical event. D’Arcus’s article really brought my research question into full focus. He shows how the Natives planned these events to cause the biggest impact. With his article I was really able to understand how Wounded Knee was planned, and why it was focused on when it was. Explain how the chosen narrative helps you better understand your historical research question. Please provide your revised research question and then explain how the chosen narrative helps you better understand your historical event. My last source covers several different events that happened and shows how the tension increased from the 1800’s to 1900’s. This brings into questions, why did they have to continue to have these demonstrations and occupations if the American government was listening, changing, or generally caring about what they were saying? There wasn’t a big enough social impact from the Native American’s that made the world listen let alone the American Government. Have events like the Wounded Knee Occupation made a strong enough social change for the Indigenous people of America to be seen as their own nation?
