Systemic Issues
Systemic Issue
How are these systemic issues handled
in the prison you have chosen?
(75–100 words each)
What changes could be made to
lessen the effects of these issues?
(100–150 words)
Putting or
helping prisoners
with mental
illnesses
incorrectly
Over time, the issue of mental health
among prisoners has grown. In certain
prisons, mentally ill inmates are
mistakenly housed among the general
population, which puts them in danger.
Furthermore, mentally ill inmates do not
receive the care they require because
jails are understaffed or do not employ
staff who have the necessary training.
Individuals who suffer from mental
illness may be mistreated or placed in
isolation when they go through phases
or become unbalanced.
One of the best ways to start
modifying the way prisoners with
disabilities are handled in jail would
be to ensure that the prison personnel
are properly trained. When convicts
are being processed into the system, I
think it would be beneficial to
undertake more thorough mental
health screenings. Prisons might
provide appropriate care for mentally
disabled inmates instead of dismissing
the possibility that they might require
additional attention or support while
they are behind bars if they took the
time to assess each prisoner. It would
also affect how these criminals are
handled by the system if diversion
programs focused on helping people
with mental impairments were
developed.
Violence
In today's culture, there is an increasing
level of violence occurring in jails. Most
of the violence is caused by gangs,
racism, and inmate attacks. Inmates may
also be sent to another housing unit or
placed in solitary confinement, or the
incident may be overlooked by the
guards. When guards step in to stop the
inmate from attacking, they risk being
attacked in return or in the future as
retaliation.
One of the several reasons why
prisoners harm police officers could be
understaffed jails. There are ten times
as many prisoners as guards. Because
there were few or no witnesses,
prisoners could harm the guards
without fear of punishment. Proper
staffing and training of these jails
could result in a better managed
group of offenders; additional eyes on
these inmates would make it harder
for them to get away with violence
and would also improve treatment of
those who commit it. To help these
prisoners control their violent acts,
more structured anger management
and de-escalation classes might be
offered.
Overcrowding
For many years, prison overcrowding has
been a problem. In addition to violence
and unfavorable living circumstances for
the prisoners, jail overcrowding causes a
host of other problems. Other problems
that these prisons can experience
include a shortage of staff members
required to manage so many prisoners
To alleviate overcrowding, I believe it
is in the best interests of inmates who
are serving time for nonviolent crimes
to seek alternatives to jail time.
Probation, diversion, and other
programs should be available to
inmates to help them with their
problems, unless they pose a threat to
Personal Approach
For me, the most significant kind of punishment is rehabilitation. Instead of keeping people up for a
while where they might not receive the attention, they need to stop them from committing crimes in the
future and possibly worsening their mental health, we should work toward rehabilitating and helping
offenders. Second, to stop further crimes from being committed, I think deterrence should be
emphasized greatly. I think that if the sentencing mechanism could be changed, everyone would get a
sentence that is appropriate for the offense they did. By focusing more on these two areas in particular,
systemic problems in prisons may be significantly reduced.
