1. I chose this screenshot because this scene symbolizes Paris’ state at the time. The dirty French flag symbolizes the filth and disgust in Paris at the time. Along with the filth of the city, it also shows the state of prisoners in Paris during the start of the 19th century. 2. The scene is set in a port, in 1815, where prisoners are working to pull in a ship into the dock during a storm. In this specific scene, Jean Valjean, imprisoned for 19 years for stealing a loaf of bread for his sister’s starving child, is tasked by a guard to lift the French flag. The fact the French flag is seen fallen in the dirty muddy water shows that there was no regard for cleanliness and patriotism in Paris at the time as it is believed that the flag should never touch the ground, especially not in dirty water. Moreover, in this scene you can see that prisoners were treated horribly at that time in Paris and were imprisoned for very minor offenses as well as showing the abuse of power of the monarchy under the rule of Louis XVIII.
