Analyzing the Methods 1 Analyzing the Methods Mary Jo Davila HIS- 306 January 13, 2024 Historians in Theory and Practice Professor Bob Wingate Grand Canyon University
Analyzing the Methods 2 In this study, I will be perusing through 4 sectors. One being how professionals in social studies use primary and secondary sources to augment their debates on various subjects in the history department. Secondly, there is talk on how historians collaborate with other subjects to explain issues of the past. Writing about the past ethically is also an issue that comes up quite a bit. Proper resources are the foundation for all historical research. Being that historians employ many different resources to add dimension to their research. Of course, proper resources lead to the strongest support for all arguments and facts. Another thing is that resources have to be based on facts and not opinion. Emotions must be put to the side and never even mentioned to even consider any chunk of resource viable. Historians are known for applying a plethora of methods when dealing with facts. One is the scientific method. This, of course, deals with impartial objectivity, which is required with hard work and objectivity at all cost. Progressive historians have also made their living based on viewing social studies in a more objective fashion. The method of Annales is another method that is duly noted. This modus operandi of this method is that it veers away from traditional ways of teaching or researching social studies. This method is focused on total history. The collaboration with other subjects outside of social studies is a great way to look outside the box when it comes to getting the best research and viable information in research. It is essential to look into other subjects such as science and language arts to get a robust stance on any research available. Many doors can be opened and can answer many questions that previously couldn’t have been answered when not looking into alternative disciplines (Hayburn, 2018).
Analyzing the Methods 3 Finally, let’s look into how historians rise above problematic issues that arise when running into negative ethical issues in that elusive quest for truth. So much change and progress has occurred since humankind has grown. So many ideas and events have happened that it is bound to happen that many a historian may never come up with all the answers to the questions they have forwarded. While ethical and moral issues may come up when perusing through historical facts, but they must realize that history is complicated and not pretty at times. In fact, history can be quite dark. Case in point: the Nazis killing 6 million Jews. It is hard to fathom that kind of hatred and violence (Kang & Park, 2016). To summarize, historians must come to terms with all types of issues in our timeline as humans. How we use these sources to teach scholars is also an issue. It is a must that we do not sugar coat issues such as slavery, the Holocaust, The Cold War, and the War on Terror. Scholars of all ages must understand the implications these eras of history had on humanity. Presenting these issues will require differentiated instruction and great care no doubt.
