Discuss the American movement to annex Texas between 1820-1845. Why did it take so long for annexation to succeed? 2. Discuss the Dred Scott case and how effective it was in settling the conflict over slavery. 3. Discuss the California gold rush and the mining frontier. How did these pioneers treat Mexicans and Indians as they settled in the West? 4. Describe domestic politics during the Civil War, both northern and southern. What problems did Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis face? How did they deal with these problems? 5. Account for the issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation, showing how it was both shrewd military and diplomatic strategy and an effort for humanitarian reform. 6. Describe the reign of white terror during Reconstruction and how Congress reacted to the violence. 7. Describe the plans for Reconstruction offered by Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Johnson, and Congress. What was the goal of each plan? How did each plan propose to accomplish its goal? 8. What problems did blacks in the South face after emancipation?
