1. What was the major contributing factor in aiding desertion? What implications did this have on the colonial system? The major contributing factor aiding in desertion would have been the implications that this had on the colonial system was this constant labor shortage. When there was a labor shortage, the missions would try to recapture runaway natives and force them back to work. These labor shortages would have greatly impacted the economy of the missions and the colonial system. 2. What reason (s) contributed most to Estanislao’s formation of colonial resistance? In my opinion, I think that some of the reasons that contributed the most to his formation of colonial resistance would have been dehumanization, forced conversions, and disease. The dehumanization because the Spanish monks and priests saw them as children who needed to be taught something and that they were stupid and inferior. They forced conversions because they were forced to go to church and were not allowed to follow their own culture. The disease that they would have been exposed to at the mission and the number of people that died is horrifying, and so I think those are some reasons why he made this formation of colonial resistance. 3. In what way did the Mexican Government play a role in escalating Native discontent? After the Mexican Revolution, the American government withheld funds and supplies from California. Alongside that local Mexicans around the area also diverted most mission crops. This made it so that the missionaries were forced to ration food with the Natives, which would have led to starvation and nutrient deficiencies. 4. What are the myth (s) held about the encounters between Europeans and Indians? A myth that is held about the encounter between Europeans and Natives is that of disease. The Spanish would give the natives diseases, and that would cause them all to do, but that is not always the case. I find this interesting, but another myth would have been about the brass plate that was later proved to be false. 5. How do the expeditions to California in chapter 5 prove significant?
The expeditions in Chapter 5 prove significant because they give us insight into what was happening. in 1543, the Spanish sent the first group, and they found other groups of natives, some nice and some hostile, before abandoning it. in 1579, the English sent an expedition, met some groups, acted strangely, and left. 1602 expedition was mapped out and gave other expeditions the possibility of happening because of this information.
