Author Rapoport brilliantly coined the term waves of terrorism and defined them in four and later five categories. In 1999, Rapoport stated that the first wave of terrorism started in Russia. He stated that modern terrorism or modern terror, began in the 1880s and spread like a wave across Asia, Europe, and the Balkans. This first wave of terror spread for as long as an entire generation. A quick search on Google indicated that a generation could be as long as 30 years. According to biblestudytools.com, when it comes to studying the bible, a generation is up to 30 years. With that said, the first wave of modern terror lasted about 30 years. The first wave was launched by the Anarchists and their method of terror was to assassinate very important key figures such as government officials. Sergei Nechaev, Nicholas
Mozorov, Peter Kroporkin, and Serge Stepniak are some of the many prominent Russian anarchists that created and possibly perfected the strategy for this type of terror. He named this first wave of terror, the Anarchist Waive probably because this style of terror was adopted
by said countries (Rapoport, 1999).
Rapoport’s second wave of terror began around 1920 and lasted approximately forty years. He coined the second wave of terror the anticolonial wave. The use of guerrilla style tactics used against the police became adopted by the above said countries alike. Then came the new left wave of terror. The third waive named the new left wave, because it was mostly about nationalist groups and their “left wing aspirations.” This wave started around the end of WWII and spread into the 1980s. It has been said that this wave was similar to or about the same as Marxists (Rapoport, 1999). Rapoport coined the fourth wave of terror as the religious wave because in this wave, it seems to have an abundance of religious extremism. Al Qaeda, ISIS, Hamas, and Hezbollah AKA Hizballah are probably the most well known extremists in this waive. Rapoport stated that he believes this wave will die out around 2025 and a new wave will probably be created by the next frustrated generation.
In all these waves of terror, Rapoport stated that the common thread in regard to terror or terrorism was/is the goal to initiate a revolution. Author David Brannon complements Rapoport’s findings by concluding that left wing terrorist strive for rebellion, revolution for a change to a Marxist style government. Also, they both concluded that terror is the means to accomplish the this (Brannon, 2005). As for my personal opinion on the first Rapoport’s first wave, I find it very interesting. Attacking prominent key figures makes me think of army sniper Carlos Hathcock during the Vietnam war when it took him several days of low crawling across an open field just to fire one round to takeout one key figure, a general. I do not know if this kind of tactic brings about
the means to an end. Former U.S. President John F. Kennedy was gruesomely assassinated in
broad daylight but I do not know why and I do not know if it ever accomplished the endgame so to speak. With that said, if someone was to assassinate the current Russian President because they feel that would end the invasion of the Ukraine, and after doing so, the Russians withdraw from the invasion, then I would say wow, what a great and effective tactic that was. I guess what I am saying is that to me, this tactic of terror died out because it was not as effective as the second wave that replaced it.
