Zimmerman Telegram & Victory Garden Poster
The Zimmerman Telegram
was a mystery message sent by Germany to Mexico in 1917,
presenting a military alliance if the United States entered the battle against Germany. The Zimmerman
Telegram, which played a pivotal role in shaping the course of WW1, also called the
Battle of the
Marne
, was ultimately instrumental in the United States' decision to engage in the war on the side of the
Allies.
WW1 began after the assassination of
Archduke Franz Ferdinand
by South Slav nationalist
Gavrilo Princip
. Parties involved included the
Triple Alliance
and
Triple Entente
. The primary purpose
of this document was to encourage Mexico to join forces with Germany by promising them land inside
the United States if Germany could defeat the U.S. in the war. The United States joined the war indirectly
after the sinking of
Lusitania
, a British ocean liner, by a German
U-boat
. The tone of the telegram is
assured and assertive, with Germany expressing a belief in their coming victory. However, it also exhibits
the desperation of the German government, as they were willing to form alliances with other nations, such
as Mexico, to benefit from the war. The
Triple Alliance
, which included Germany, Austria-Hungary, and
Italy. During the war, Germany used
trench warfare
Germany used the
Western Front
during the war,
while the United States used the
Eastern Front
. The Zimmerman Telegram reveals the strategic alliances
that existed during this period.
The Victory Garden Poster, on the other hand, had a different motive. The poster uses bright
colors and a big, bold font to capture the viewer's attention. It also features a young woman in the field
planting, giving off a feeling of patriotism and duty. Through this poster, the government aimed to not
only alleviate the stress on national resources but also to boost morale and promote a sense of solidarity

and contribution to the war effort. This poster was part of the propaganda efforts used by various
countries during WW1 to bolster their war efforts.
In conclusion, these primary sources provide valuable insight into the attitudes and strategies
used during WW1. They also highlight the distinct procedures of Germany and the
USA
during the
conflict. By understanding the context and reading these resources, we can gain a better understanding of
the effect of wartime propaganda and its role in shaping public opinion. As we reflect on these assets, it is
essential to remember the sacrifices made by people who fought in WW1 and the lessons we can learn
from history to create a better future.
