African American History Final Rationale
The film that I have created, “Desperate Deals,” includes a variety of overlapping themes
from the films, "Us," “Eve's Bayou” and “Candyman.” There are a lot of parallels in the African American horror movies, "Us," “Eve's Bayou,” and “Candyman" in terms of plot, topic, and audience perception. These pieces were included and employed throughout the movie to illustrate the themes
of voodoo ceremonies, class inequality and white supremacy.
The plot of the film "Us" revolved around the main character, Adelaide, and how she had
a traumatic past. Shortly after, four masked men forcefully break into the Wilson residence, forcing the family to fight for their life. When the masks are taken off towards the end of the movie, the family is shocked to realize that each attacker takes on a new look. Next, the film “Eve's Bayou,” is about Eve Batistel, the main character, who learns that her family's lavish lifestyle is just a front. Eve's mother, Roz, and her teenage sister, Cisely, experience mental upheaval due to the affair of her dashing father, Louis. However, Eve is able to get some comfort
from her eccentric psychic aunt, Mozelle. The film Candyman was on Cabrini-Green housing developments in Chicago which were haunted for decades by a phantom of the supernatural,
one-handed murderer. Unaware that it would cause Candyman to lose his mind and unleash a horrifying wave of violence that sets him on a collision course with fate.
Taking a cue from "Us," because of their inferior financial and social statuses, Josh, in “Desperate Deals,” mirrors Adalaide (Red), from “Us,” by experiencing societal marginalization
throughout his life and constantly searching for a way out. Adelaide traded places with Red because she could not bear the miseries of being a slave. Josh has a similar situation in that his financial difficulties prevent him from leading a typical college life. In the film, the main character, Adelaide was a member of the tethered. One instance of this is when she was eating at the table with her family, but while her family was eating various meats, she was eating a strawberry.Following the revelation that Adelaide was a tethered person all along, it became clear that she was traumatized and lacked privilege as a tethered person, as seen by her refusal to eat any raw flesh from the bunnies because of their poor living conditions. Josh consistently has financial difficulties and little family support, which speaks to the same lack of privilege that is seen in Adelaide.
In the movie, “Eve's Bayou,” my thoughts were that the movie was very interesting and mysterious and could be described as both a drama and a horror movie as it has the qualities of both. The theme
in particular that stood out to me was the voodoo ritual appearing throughout the film. To elaborate, it seems as though Eve's contacts with the Voodoo lady are haunting her in the moment where she believes she saw her in the cemetery while in fact she was not there. That scene in particular kept me on the edge of my seat and I was eager to know what was going to happen next. I also believe that the voodoo part of the film could be perceived differently by each viewer. For example, some people could believe that Eve really did not kill her father as it
