Week 3 Discussion
The topic I have chosen is how drug/alcohol exposure can affect language acquisition and development.
Research shows that the effects of prenatal drug/alcohol exposure will be withdrawal frequently, sudden episodes of violence, and other developmental delays. Other deficits may include intellectual disabilities, physical abnormalities, and visual and auditory impairments.
According to Mattson, Crocker, and Nguyen (2011), when a child is exposed to alcohol, the development of the growing brain will be altered. It is important that expecting mothers understand all the risk factors when using drugs and consuming alcohol. When exposed to alcohol and drugs the baby will be at risk of social communication impairments and other major language deficits.
