2 Chronic Illness Trends: Chronic illness trends can vary significantly between countries due to factors like lifestyle, genetics, healthcare infrastructure and socioeconomic status. Developed countries like the United States have higher rates of chronic illnesses like obesity, heart disease, diabetes and obesity that is due to lifestyle factors. More developed countries have a higher burden of communicable diseases such as tuberculosis and malaria, but they are experiencing a rise in chronic diseases due to changing lifestyles and urbanization as well. Elderly Long Term Care Consumers: The United States has a substantial elderly population with increasing numbers needing long term care that is due to aging demographics. Developing countries may have varying levels of long-term care due to resource constraints. ” At some point in our lives, about 60 percent of us will need assistance with things like getting dressed, driving to appointments or making meals. Planning is critical but many people are not sure what is covered by insurance and people are often misinformed about what is covered by Medicare.” (Services, n.d.) Expected Changes: Both countries are likely to experience an increase in the elderly population due to aging demographics. The United States has been preparing for the silver tsunami as the baby boomer generation ages. Developing countries may see a more rapid increase due to shifting demographics and improvement in healthcare. Characteristics of Elderly Population: In the United States, the elderly population is diverse, including different ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds. Many elderly individuals in developed countries may have a higher life expectancy but they have a higher prevalence of chronic diseases due to the lifestyle factors. Developing countries often have a larger rural population with limited access to healthcare. Long Term Care Needs: Long term healthcare needs can differ based on the prevalence of chronic illnesses and access to medical facilities. In developed countries, the focus might be on managing chronic diseases and providing specialized care. In developing countries, there might be a need for basic healthcare infrastructure and care facilities. Caregivers: Institutional caregivers in developed countries include nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Non institution caregivers may include home healthcare professionals and family
3 members. Developing countries may rely more on informal family caregiving due to limited resources. Factors Affecting Caregiving: Factors such as economic status, societal support and cultural norms all play a significant role in caregiving. Developed countries may have better support systems and training for each caregiver while developing countries may face challenges due to limited resources. Quality of Care: Quality of care can vary significantly. Developed countries often have better funded healthcare systems and stricter regulations for care facilities. Developing countries might struggle to maintain consistent quality due to resource limitations. Healthcare Costs: Healthcare costs in the United States are notoriously high, larger due to a complex healthcare system and high administrative costs. Developing countries often have lower costs, but affordability can still be an issue especially for the baby boomer population. ” Healthcare is one of the top social and economic problems facing Americans today. The rising cost of medical care and health insurance is impacting the livelihood of many Americans in one way or another” (Health Care Statistics in the United States, n.d.) Social Support: In the United States, there are Medicare ad Medicaid programs that provide some levels of social support for elderly healthcare costs. Developing counties might have government sponsored or NGO driven initiatives to provide healthcare coverage but the coverage levels can vary.
