DO28 Phase Two: Step 5
Primary Primary prevention is meant to prevent disease from occurring. The population that primary prevention is intended for are healthy individuals. The interventions of primary prevention consist of activities that reduce the risk of disease. For example, an individual primary prevention strategy would be to eat healthy foods and exercise. Another behavior that can reduce risk of disease is limiting alcohol consumption and discourage smoking cigarettes through education. The social community can implement primary prevention through vaccination initiatives. For example, have a mobile vaccination clinic. On a system level, the primary target would be vulnerable populations. For example, targeting low socioeconomic comminutes and giving them access to healthy foods at a free or reduced rate. Also educating the public on matters related to risk factors and disease processes. Secondary Secondary prevention is aimed at early detection and intervention. On a individual level some interventions that can be implemented would performing a mammogram on a women that is high risk for breast cancer. Other interventions at a secondary level would be ensuring patients have access to their medication and are educated on taking them. At the community-level a secondary intervention would be to have a blood pressure and diabetes screening at a church for a predominantly African American community because this population is at high risk for these diseases. On a system-level a secondary prevention intervention would be implementing an STD screening campaign through public health to rural communities, which are generally at higher risk for contracting STDs. Tertiary Tertiary interventions include managing diseases through medication, surgical intervention, and rehabilitative services. For example, if a person has cancer surgically removing it to prevent its spread or improve quality of life would qualify as a tertiary intervention. On a community/social
level, an intervention would include assigning a case manager to a high-risk population for noncompliance and ensuring these individuals have follow up appointments. On a system level, public health could partner with a transportation company to transport populations with a social determinant of Neighborhood and Build Environment to give them access to healthcare.
