From Sickcare to Wellcare
Does your professional definition of healthcare change after watching this video? Why or
why not?
o
Yes, my professional definition of healthcare changed after watching this video. I work in a pharmacy. We are all about vaccinations to prevent diseases and medication to treat health conditions. Wellcare is not exactly a new concept, but I agree with the speaker that it is not incorporated into our “sick care” system.
If traditional healthcare were to stray into the realm of socioeconomics and address health
disparities through measures such as prescribing healthy foods, what effects on health delivery models would you anticipate? Explain.
o
If traditional healthcare incorporated measures to address health disparities, it would revolutionize healthcare for those with low socioeconomic status. It is a well-known fact that people with low socioeconomic status are more susceptible to chronic disease. Healthcare providers can provide literature and educate patients. However, low health literacy may affect the ability to understand and implement changes. Low-income families may be on SNAP to help with the cost of food. However, in low-income neighborhoods, healthy foods may not be readily available. Also, healthy foods cost more. So, with limited income, one buys low-cost foods to get more. If these matters could be incorporated into the healthcare system it would help people live healthier.
