INTRODUCTION Effective communication is crucial in the healthcare industry, forming the foundation of patient safety, collaborative teamwork, compassionate care, and cultural competence. Healthcare is a complex and diverse field where practitioners work with people of all ages, address the challenges of caring for vulnerable populations, deliver difficult news, and interact with patients from various cultural backgrounds. Therefore, it is essential to understand one's own communication style and also be aware of the communication preferences of others to ensure effective communication and avoid misunderstandings (Banerjee et al., 2016) . This essay will take you on a trip to discover the multidimensional importance of communication styles in healthcare. It begins with exploring the positive qualities of one's dominant communication style and how it might promote good interactions with others. Furthermore, it sheds insight on the communication styles of those with whom one may most effectively converse and elucidates the causes for this synergy. Real-world examples demonstrate the value of one's communication style, especially in the context of healthcare practice, when empathy, clarity, and adaptability are essential. However, as with every communication technique, there are drawbacks to consider ( Impact of Communication in Healthcare | Institute for Healthcare Communication , n.d.) . This essay examines the potential hazards and complexities of a dominant communication style in one-on-one conversations and collaborative contexts, as well as ways to overcome these obstacles. It also tackles communication styles in others that may cause problems and suggests techniques for developing new communication skills as a healthcare practitioner (Alu, 2022a) . At the heart of this investigation is a fundamental question: why is understanding one's communication style and the ability to read and adapt to the styles of others, so important in the healthcare profession? To address this issue, we will travel through the diverse landscape of healthcare, where good communication is the linchpin that holds the concepts of patient-centred care, safety, teamwork, and cultural competence together. The route ahead is highlighted by the awareness that communication is more than a skill in the noble vocation of healthcare, where lives are at risk and every word spoken has far-reaching implications. COMMUNICATION STRENGTHS Empathy and Active Listening: Empathy and active listening are characteristics of my dominant communication style. I am able to connect with others because I understand their emotions and concerns. This enables me to establish a conversation space that is both secure and supportive. Patient-Centred Approach: I prioritise the needs and preferences of the individual with whom I am speaking, which is consistent with patient-centred care concepts. This method guarantees that people feel valued and involved in decision-making. Conflict Resolution: My communication style is effective in conflict resolution. I can de- escalate difficult situations by acknowledging others' emotions and seeking common ground, which leads to beneficial outcomes ( Impact of Communication in Healthcare | Institute for Healthcare Communication , n.d.) . EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION WITH OTHERS I interact best with those that have a collaborative and sympathetic communication approach. When others prioritise active listening and empathy, a harmonious and respectful communication atmosphere is created. This synergy results in improved understanding, trust, and the capacity to collaborate effectively.
Examples of How My Dominant Communication Style Has Benefited Me: Patient-Centred Care: In my healthcare practice, my compassionate and patient-centred approach has resulted in higher patient satisfaction and treatment plan adherence. Collaboration: My communication style encourages open and polite relationships with coworkers. It improves results by facilitating effective collaboration on patient care, decision- making, and problem-solving. Conflict Resolution: I have effectively mediated team member conflicts, resulting in resolutions that promote patient care. I contribute to a positive team atmosphere by acknowledging everyone's point of view and finding common ground (Markides, 2011) . COMMUNICATION CHALLENGES : Time-consuming: Due to the fast-paced nature of healthcare, my sympathetic communication style might be time-consuming. There may be limited time for prolonged sympathetic contacts in critical situations. Over-identification: There is a risk of over-identification with patients, which can result in emotional fatigue or breached professional boundaries. To avoid emotional weariness, I must strike a balance between empathy and self-care ( Impact of Communication in Healthcare | Institute for Healthcare Communication , n.d.) .
