Stimulants: (Atomoxetine)
Side effects- Decreased appetite and sleep irritability, anxiety, heart rate changes.
Liver function- varies from minor, transient and asymptomatic elevations in serum aminotransferase
levels to clinically apparent hepatitis that can be prolonged and even fatal.
Timolol eye drops- Educate about punctal occlusion to limit systemic effects, including bradycardia,
exacerbation of pulmonary disease, and hypotension.
Atropine sulfate- how does it act on the eye? Works by blocking the chemical acetylcholine, which
relaxes the ciliary muscle of the eye and causes the pupil to dilate.
Mydriatic eye drops- how do they work? They relax the muscles of the eye to dilate the pupil.
What are the systemic effects? Life-threatening cardiovascular, respiratory, central nervous system (CNS)
and gastrointestinal adverse effects.
Donepezil- side effects-Diarrhea, loss of appetite, muscle cramps, nausea, trouble sleeping, vomiting.
Phenylephrine- side effects- Nervousness, dizziness, vomiting, blurred vision, sleeplessness, fast
heartbeat.
What aspects are evaluated in a mental status exam? orientation to person, time, place, date, season,
and day of the week; ability to interpret proverbs; ability to perform math calculations; memorization
and short-term recall; naming common objects in the environment; ability to follow multistep
commands; and ability to write or copy a simple drawing.
When should a client expect improvement in vision after cataract removal surgery? 1-3 days after
surgery, but could take 3-10 weeks to get the full benefits of surgery and to see as clearly as possible.
What type of schedule should be designed for a child with autism and why? Visual schedules that are
consistent.
Define Apraxia-The loss of ability to execute or carry out skilled movement and gestures.
Akathisia-An inability to remain still.
Agnosia-Loss of the ability to identify objects or people.
Explain the difference between symptoms of inattention and symptoms of hyperactivity in a child with
ADHD.
Inattention-having difficulty paying attention. Hyperactivity-having too much energy, moving or talking
too much.
Explain why hearing loss could be confused with dementia. -Patients with dementia can have a hard time
communicating with others, such as not being able to find the right words for what they want to say or
have a difficult time processing what they heard.
Explain why a family with a child with autism would be referred to family therapy. -To help families
through a difficult situation and to find a new normal together and develop a way or plan to manage
with the news.
When prioritizing care for any patient, what is the number one priority and why? Patient safety, because
you want to reduce risks of harm to patients or others while giving medical care.
Define a chemical restraint.
Explain when it is appropriate to utilize a chemical restraint.
What other
interventions must first be performed. -A chemical restraint is the intentional use of any medication to
subdue, sedate, or restrain a patient. Chemical restraints are appropriate when the patient is at risk to
harm themselves or others.
