DSM Changes
Overview
The DSM-5 shifted from the DSM-IV in its approach regarding substance use disorders. What are the major
changes, and do they improve or hinder diagnosis and treatment? As a practitioner, you may encounter some
documents using the DSM-IV and some using the DSM-5. Your goal is to understand the differences so that
you can interpret and successfully work with clinical documents using the different approaches.
An
important element of this assignment is to ask questions on any matter you do not understand or are
confused about.
Remember that journal assignments are private between the student and the instructor. No one else will see
your assignments.
Prompt
Create your journal assignment and address the following:
•
Briefly describe all the major changes in substance use disorders from DSM-IV to the DSM-5,
including:
•
Changes in terminology
•
Changes to use and dependency (including severity)
•
Changes regarding legal issues
•
Additional (added) diagnostic criteria
•
Share your thoughts about the diagnostic and treatment consequences of these changes. Are they for
the better or the worst, and in what way?
•
If you are confused or unclear about any of the changes from DSM 4 to 5, ask questions of your
instructor. Your goal is to understand.
What to Submit
Your journal assignment should be 3 to 5 paragraphs in length. Articulate your insights and ideas in a
professional manner. Include citations and references in APA format where appropriate.
