Assignment 7: Group Assignment
2
Hearing loss can have a profound impact on an individual and their families which can
create conflict. It is important to diagnose accurately the type of hearing loss to provide the
correct interventions and assistance. Therefore, understanding Mesha’s recent diagnosis of
profound sensorineural hearing loss helps identify the correct support available to her and the
challenges Mesha may face being raised in the deaf community versus the hearing community.
A parent’s role is crucial in the decision-making process when it comes to their children.
As an intervention specialist, the parents’ decisions must be respected. However, parents should
be provided with individualized instruction and support to help students overcome their
difficulties and receive early intervention. As Mesha’s intervention specialist, I would encourage
her parents to consider the use of hearing aids. Although sensorineural loss cannot be restored, it
can be treated with amplification. (Justice and Redle, 2013, pg. 454). Early intervention with the
use of hearing aids can have a significant impact on Mesha’s long-term developmental
achievements.
