Electronic health record systems improve communication between patients and providers in several ways: Improves treatment through data collection – Electronic health records allow physicians to improve data collection (Wiley, 2020). Physicians can better access personal records, test results, health education tools, and tools for tracking and assessing chronic disease management (White & Danis, 2016). Increases outpatient care – Patients can be treated from the comfort of their home via telehealth appointments because physicians can access their records electronically. This improves patient/provider communication and health care convenience (ONC, 2022). Electronic health records also enable physicians and patients to communicate through messaging if needed. Reduces medical errors – electronic health records provide accurate, up-to-date information about patients. This reduces the chances of medical errors and allows physicians to provide safer care. Electronic health records also improve clinical decision-making by integrating patient information from multiple sources (ONC, 2022). Patient driven healthcare – patients are enabled to take care of their health. Electronic health records are patient-centered and encourage healthier lifestyles. It also increases preventative care that improves patient health. References: White, A., & Danis, M. (2016, June 12). Managing and using information systems: A strategic approach (7th ed.). Wiley. Hi Alexia, You mentioned that one of the benefits of electronic health records is the cross communication between providers. Although I do agree that this is a benefit, I also think there are 2 behavioral issues that can result from this record sharing:
Stress from monitoring (Wiley, 2020) – patient records may only be shared for purposes authorized by law or by you (Department of Health and Human Services, 2023). This means the record still has to be manually updated/shared. What is collected and how it is used (Wiley, 2020) - if the patient/provider does not fully fill out the electronic health record, then it is not as valuable. Thanks, Molly References: Pearlson, K.
