Short Answer: Ethical Values
2
The ethical issue that I see in the Jones’ case would be permanency. “When a child in
foster care experiences placement instability, it can have a significant negative impact on
their overall well-being. Kinship care has become a preferred option in most U.S. child
welfare systems, because it is the least restrictive and most family-like out-of-home
placement for children, and those in kinship care environments have fewer disruptions and
overall better permanency outcomes than those in nonfamilial placements” (Child Welfare,
n.d.). The grandmother does not want to formally adopt her four grandchildren. She feels that
since they are her grandchildren that adoption is not necessary. Although she does not feel
adoption is necessary, she does not want anyone else to adopt them (Downs, S, Moore, E., &
McFadden, E. J. 2009).
When operating from an ethical framework in welfare services, particularly in kinship
care, it is important for many reasons. First it ensures the wellbeing of the child or children.
It promotes a safety, stable and positive development within familiar relationships. Next it
provides a set of standards that the practitioners follow to maintain integrity and
accountability in their actions. Finally, it reduces the risk of legal issues and promotes a
collaborative approach with families.
When looking back at my module three journal, I would not change my responses.
However, I would add I feel practitioners that work in in the child welfare system should stay
updated on ethical guidelines and participate in any training that would help enhance their
skills. In this case there are multiple children involved and the focus should be the safety and
well-being of the children. Being updated on ethical guidelines would help the practitioner
decide just that.
