1 Challenges of Long-Term Care Patricia Carpenter Long-Term Care Administration, College of DuPage LTC-1130: Introduction to Long-Term Care Services Professor Jennifer Conniff December 5, 2023 Challenge Met Most Successfully: Integration of Technology: One challenge that has seen notable success is the integration of technology in long-term care. Various technological advancements have been implemented to enhance patient care, improve efficiency, and address communication issues. Telehealth, electronic health records (EHRs), remote monitoring, and assistive technologies have become more prevalent, offering benefits such as improved access to care, better communication between healthcare providers, and enhanced monitoring of patients' health. This progress has been driven by a recognition of the potential of technology to transform and optimize healthcare delivery in the long-term care sector (Economist Impact report, Advancing the frontier of health and technology integration: The 2023 Digital Health Barometer highlights opportunities in digitalisation of healthcare., 2023) . Explanation:
2 The success in integrating technology can be attributed to the increasing awareness of the benefits it brings, including cost-effectiveness, improved patient outcomes, and the ability to reach individuals in remote or underserved areas. Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the adoption of telehealth and other technologies, highlighting their importance in ensuring continuity of care and reducing the risk of infection. The positive outcomes associated with technology adoption, along with ongoing advancements, contribute to its perceived success in addressing certain challenges in long-term care (Wu, 2017) . Challenge with the Least Progress: Workforce Shortages: Shortages of skilled nurses, nursing assistants, and other healthcare professionals, have been a persistent and challenging issue. While various initiatives have been undertaken to address this, including recruitment efforts, training programs, and policy changes, achieving a substantial and sustained increase in the workforce has proven difficult. This affects the overall quality of care residents receive. Without core staff there is more room for errors and less relationship building with residents and other staff. (Christinck, 2023) . Explanation: Workforce shortages are complex and multifaceted. Factors such as low wages and demanding work conditions contribute to the challenges in attracting and retaining healthcare professionals in the long-term care sector. The nature of the work, including emotional stress and physical demands, further complicates efforts to address shortages. External factors, such as demographic changes and competition with other healthcare settings, pose ongoing challenges. While progress has been made in some areas, achieving a comprehensive solution to workforce shortages remains an ongoing and challenging endeavor (Scales, 2021) .
