Content and summary of activity:
(You may
complete in word or by hand)
In this session, I implemented a math circle time discussion with a group of
young children in our setting. The goal was to encourage sustained shared
thinking and support emergent mathematical development. I presented a
simple mathematical problem involving counting and asked the children to
share their problem-solving strategies and reasoning with the group.

How did the activity go overall?
The activity went well overall. The children were actively engaged and eager to share their ideas.
They demonstrated a willingness to listen to their peers and consider alternative approaches to
solving the problem.
What went particularly well?
The children were enthusiastic and actively participated in the discussion.
They used concrete manipulatives to support their explanations, which helped make their
thinking visible.
The open-ended nature of the problem allowed for a variety of responses and encouraged
critical thinking.
What went not so well?
Some children were shy and hesitant to speak up, which limited their participation.
One challenge was managing the discussion to ensure that all children had the
opportunity to share their thoughts.
What would you do differently next time?
To address shyness or hesitancy, I would implement strategies to create a more inclusive
environment, such as using smaller discussion groups or providing additional time for
individual reflection before group sharing.
I would also plan for a more structured turn-taking system to ensure that all children have
an equal chance to contribute.
What feedback or actions did your mentor give or suggest to you?
My mentor provided feedback on the positive aspects of the session, such as the engagement of
the children and the use of manipulatives. They suggested exploring strategies to encourage shy
children to participate, such as using visuals or props to support their explanations.
Remember that this should be a
valuable reflective practice
, and demonstrate that you can identify
areas for your own development, as well as improvements that have already been made in your
performance. This should be completed in
every
instance and you should provide approx.175 words.
You must ensure that this is signed by your mentor / supervisor and uploaded to the portfolio
system.
