HS 421 assignment 3.6.
July 11,2023
Identity diffusion is when in adolescence and is a state where a person doesn’t quite develop an
identity: it’s when the adolescent is confused in their identity. An example could be a youth
student who
hasn’t considered college yet. The identity discussion would be that student hasn’t come to terms with
their professional identity. Another example could be a youth that is female but doesn’t quite feel like
they identify as a female. Now identity achievement is when a youth questions their beliefs and values.
This is when that youth is moving from adolescence to adulthood and could be going through changes in
their thinking process and also what they consider important or of value. That youth could be going
hiding from possible life changing events because they are scared of change and to jump out of what
they have known growing up their whole life. As adults we need to remember that youth are young and
looking for direction in the world. We need to remember that we to were confused and felt lost at times
and even hid from major things out of fear or not being ready yet.
There are four different stages of identity
that people will go through throughout their life. The first
one is identity diffusion. As an adult trying to help a youth through something like this I believe patience
is the biggest blessing that can be offered during that time. Patience will help show them that they isn’t
have to rush through and try to make a decision about themselves because of others. It helps teach
them there isn’t a time limit on things like this and the best thing to do is take their time and really do
what feels right to them.
Also offering personal experiences with things like this could also really help
youth know that they aren’t alone in this moment and that this will pass and they will make it out ok.
During the second stage which is identity
foreclosure, adolescents accept other peoples values over
their own.
Due to lack of rebellion youth in this stage seem well-behaved and easy going.
But in reality
it can actually be because they have disregard for their own establishing of their identity and values. Like
when a parent has their child’s future all planned out without the child having any say so in the direction
of their life at all. Identity foreclosure is when they know who they are in a way but haven’t explored
options and gotten to see what’s out there. Like someone who has grown up in a Christian home and

was taught liking the same sex as then is wrong and forbidden. But they may like the same sex as
themselves but hasn’t explored that avenue yet. Or they identify as Christian because that’s what they
were taught so that’s what they know. Adults can help youth in this stage explore their options based off
of their likes again with personal experiences. Also help guide them towards finding themselves and
helping to teach them to do what makes them happy will help. Teaching them to be themselves and not
just following what others are doing will really help them
to learn who they are.
The next stage is the moratorium stage. During this stage the child matures into a functional adult
because they are attentive to major life decisions. They understand the impacts they can have in life and
have plans or are going through their plan for their future. In this stage helping the youth in the
transition to adulthood by supporting them in their decisions and sharing experiences to help them go
down a good path can help. Exposing the importance of sticking to their values in beliefs in anything they
do in life is important for them and their identity. Helping them weigh the pros and cons without having
a bias opinion will be very important.
Identity achievement is a balance stage because it involves resolving major life crises. In this stage the
youth will have properly learned and have resolved their challenges. They have committed to plans for
their future based off of their values and beliefs. They have gained a level of maturity that helps for the
transition into adulthood.
In this stage the youth just needs someone to be there for them and to listen
to them. They need someone to be non judgmental and accept them for who they are and what they
want to do and be in life. Overall patience and an open mind and open heart and personal experiences is
the most important for youth going through theses stages
