Secondary Disciplinary Literacy – C728 Task 2 Writing Across Disciplines Michel Deveau 2012.4.3  :  Writing within the Disciplines The graduate plans writing activities that promote understanding of discipline-specific content through organization, analysis, and synthesis of ideas. 2012.4.4  :  Inquiry and Disciplinary Literacy The graduate creates authentic learning tasks and activities that provide students with opportunities to demonstrate discipline-specific understandings. 2012.4.5  :  Literacy within Specific Disciplines The graduate integrates instructional strategies and materials in disciplinary literacy practices to enhance student understanding within the disciplines. INTRODUCTION As secondary students proceed through various disciplines, they must write like a scientist, historian, or mathematician. In this task, you will create an authentic writing activity specific to your discipline to enhance student understanding of content across various disciplines.   A.    Describe how inquiry-based teaching methods can affect student learning in your discipline. B.    Design  one  authentic writing activity that is specific to your discipline ( suggested length of 2–3 pages ). Be sure to address each of the following elements of your writing activity: •    type of writing (e.g., science report, persuasive essay, research paper) •    activity topic (e.g., volcanoes, pollution, a historical event) •    discipline standard •    description of the disciplinary writing activity, including a scaffold you will use to help your students write like a disciplinary expert and an
instructional strategy you will use to support writing and learning in the content area •    curricular content (e.g., texts, online sources) that you will use to support the activity 1. Explain how your disciplinary writing activity will promote understanding of the activity topic. 2.    Justify how the instruction (i.e., curricular content, instructional strategies) you chose to incorporate into your writing activity will enhance student understanding of the content. Use course source materials or other scholarly research in your justification. Readers interpret and make sense of an author’s words and ideas about a topic. Writers generate text to represent their own ideas and thinking. he authentic purpose of writing is often to promote deeper understanding of a topic through organization, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation of key ideas. This writing may be in response to texts they have read or to reflect on processes and procedures
