Coming into this course I didn’t fully understand what coaching really was. Through the current 6 weeks, I have learned tools that I can care for in the counseling field. Week 1 was the most important part. Each chapter 1 through 4 gave its lesson. In Chapter 2 of the book Developing Coaching Skills, the GROW model is introduced. Being able to set goals for my clients is very important to counseling. This will give them a chance from the client to explain what they want out of counseling. Having the client see clearly about life will help with the reality of things while going through therapy. Giving the client options to heal and have an alternative course of action. The last course of action to GROW is Will. This focuses on the concrete action steps that the client will take. GROW is the model that I will take with me into my professional development of counseling.
The coaching tools that were explained in Chapter 5 would be very important
to take in the professional field of counseling. The tools that are given in this chapter help give clients awareness. Motivational interviewing (MI) is one of the most important tools I learned. It’s a method that was originally developed by clinical therapists to help people overcome drug and alcohol addictions ( D.Sternard, 2021). In counseling, I deal with a lot of people who deal with addictions, and learning to use it in the coaching method gave me a different way of coaching/teaching it to clients.
This course taught me how to understand how to coach. The meaning of coaching is a purposeful interaction in which a person uses a questioning approach to help another person think through challenging issues, raise their
self-awareness, consider their options, and take the right actions (D.Sternad, 2021). Learning how to coach will help me get almost anyone through rough times in life. Coaching is not counseling, it’s a method for helping develop (D.Sternad, 2021). I can use the things I learned in this course to be a life coach before I finish my internship hours. Also, I plan on coaching youth football soon and the tools will help develop the kids that play.
