D190 Task 2 A. Refer to the attached “Records Waiting to be Dropped from DNFB” spreadsheet and use a data sort to do the following: 1. Describe a trend related to the health information management (HIM) department. Upon sorting and filtering the data, the most obvious trend is the amount of patients who have been readmitted under 30 days. This trend is especially apparent In the cardiology unit w ith 12 patients with readmits. This amount is higher than any other department. The next trend seen is the average pending dollar amount for the departments. The cardiology department currently has the highest average pending dollar amount, with over $170,000 for patients being billed from their department. 2. Identify the two physicians with the highest pending dollar amount. The physicians with the highest pending dollar amount are as follows: Dr. Abboud – Cardiology: $991,745.59 pending Dr. Carpenter – Cardiology: $768,274 pending It is worth noting that the cardiology department has eight patients out of the top 10 highest pending dollar amounts. 3. Explain the relationship between readmits and diagnosis codes. The aforementioned cardiology department has the most readmits in the hospital, with 12 of the 18 accounting for 67% of total readmits. Most readmits within 30 days came from patients with acute diagnoses. Patients with acute diagnoses, such as patients with
acute and subacute endocarditis and acute myocardial infarction, make up a large portion of the readmits—patients who are suffering from chronic conditions, such as chronic congestive heart failure. 4. Analyze the financial impact that the findings from parts A1, A2, and A3 have on the hospital. Felder Hospital’s cardiology department is having the largest financial impact on the hospital. The cardiology department not only has the most patients listed on the DFNB report, but their department also has the highest dollar amount average overall. The top five patients from the cardiology department account for over $3 million dollars of money outstanding. It is important that cardiology providers find ways to ensure their documentation and all required documents are submitted in a timely manner so as not to delay the revenue cycle and reimbursement. The cardiology department has many acute cases that regularly become readmits within 30 days, and each interaction requires claims to be submitted to the hundreds of thousands. Delays in processing the claims can interrupt the revenue cycle, costing the hospital millions. B. Create a memo addressed to the CFO that summarizes your findings from parts A1, A2, and A3. 6/17/2024 To: Felder Hospital CFO From: Mackenzie Okwah, HIM Director
