Geology Name(s): __________________________ Ice ages and Yosemite National Park Lab Report Complete your responses in a color other than black or red . It may be helpful to print this lab to complete it. Part 1: Interpreting Topographic Profiles Match up the following : write the letter of the correct topographic map to the right of the cross- section. 1
Topographic Maps (with lab kit) Lab Report Part 2: Yosemite Valley and the Tioga Glaciation 1. What is the contour interval of this map? 2. What is the elevation of Tenaya Creek, flows between North Dome and Half Dome into Yosemite Valley, where it joins the Merced River?  3. What is the elevation of Tenaya Creek at the Wilderness Boundary marked at the northeast end of Tenaya Canyon? 4. What is the relief of Tenaya Creek between the Wilderness Boundary and where it joins the Merced River?  [Reminder, relief is the difference in elevation between two points.] 5. Calculate the slope between Mirror Lake and the top of Half Dome, on the northwest side of the mountain.  NOTE: Please show your work. 6. Calculate the slope between the "Spring" (at 7400 ft elevation) along the  Half Dome Trail  and the top of Half Dome.  NOTE: Measure horizontal distance along the trail. Please show your work. 7. Which way would you rather get to the top of Half Dome, on the northwest side or along the Half Dome Trail? Why? 2
Topographic Maps (with lab kit) Lab Report 8. Find the label "El Capitan", above the  El Capitan Meadow  in the Yosemite Valley floor. This is a challenging rock climbing location - use the contour lines to explain why this might be.  [Options: You can calculate relief or slope to support your answer, or describe how the contour lines look and what you can infer from that.] 9. The Tioga Glaciation (28,000 - 14,000 years ago) was the most recent episode of glacial activity in Yosemite National Park (YNP). Read one of three sections on the YNP website:  Researching Past Glaciers in Yosemite   (Links to an external site.) . o Choose one  of these three sections to read: o How extensive were the glaciers? o What directions did the glaciers flow? o How thick were the glaciers? o Which section did you choose? o What are 3-5 new or interesting details in the section you read? Part 3: Create a guide for a location of your choice 1. Pretend a friend or family member is visiting Yosemite Valley for the day, and you want to direct them to visit that feature. o Describe in detail how to drive, hike, and/or climb to that location. Include the relief (elevation gain or loss) and distance of the hike, and a sketch of the topographic profile along the hike. o Describe what your friend will see when they arrive at that location. o If you can find a picture online taken from that location, include it in your lab report as well. o Include 1-2 sentences about the geological history of the area (i.e., what processes formed this landscape?). You might find clues in the features names on the map itself, or you might need to look up the location in your textbook or online. 2. Get out your granite sample from your Geology Kit. Insert a picture of the rock sample. 3

Topographic Maps (with lab kit) Lab Report 3. Using your granite sample, think about what you find interesting about how granite forms, how much granite there is exposed in Yosemite Valley, and/or how both the rock and landscape (glacier-sculpted) formed. Find a friend or family member to talk with for ~5 minutes, and explain to them what you find interesting about granite and/or Yosemite Valley. What did you share? And what was your friend or family member most interested in (what did they ask about)? 4. If your friend or family member had 3 days to visit Yosemite Valley, what other features would you recommend they visit? Why? 4
