Chapter 6 Metamorphic Rocks Assignment
1. Describe how a rock may change during metamorphism
During metamorphism there are a few ways a rock may change. Firstly, the
minerals can react to form
new minerals. The mineral crystals can change size and shape. Minerals can move through the rock to
create bands.
2. What drives metamorphism?
Metamorphism happens when rocks undergo a change in pressure, temperature, or hot mineral liquids.
3. How is confining pressure different from differential stress?
Confining pressure squeezes a rock equally in all directions while differential stresses are greater in one
direction than others.
4. What is foliation?
Distinguish between slaty cleavage, schistosity, and gneissic textures.
Foliation
is nearly flat arrangements of minerals in a rock. Slaty cleavage is cleavage made of thin slates
of rock. Schistosity is when a rock has the slaty cleavage process and also have a coarser
grained texture.
5. Briefly describe the three mechanisms by which minerals develop a preferred orientation.
The three merchandises that minerals develop a preferred orientation are the rotation of platy mineral
grains, recrystallization to produce new minerals, and the flattening of spherically shaped grains.
6. List some changes that might occur to a rock in response to metamorphic processes.
Some changes that may occur are an increased density, change in grain size, low temp crystals to high
temp crystals.
7. In the rock mica schist, what does mica indicate and what does schist indicate?
Schists indicates the texture of rocks. Mica indicates that a schist is composed of mostly biotite and
Muscovite
8. How are marble and quartzite similar?
How are they different?
They both don’t go through foliation. Marble is made of calcite, quartzite is made of quartz.
9. Distinguish between contact metamorphism and regional metamorphism.
Which creases the greater
quantity of metamorphic rock?
Contact metamorphism occurs near a heat source. Regional occurs over a large region due to tectonic
plates. Regional creases
a greater quantity of metamorphic rock.
10. What is hydrothermal metamorphism and where does it most occur?
Hydrothermal metamorphism is changes that occur in rocks near the surface. where there is intense
activity of hot water.
