Choose 4 rocks and 4 slabs, look at these rocks in person and make observations to fill the two tables. Scan and submit. Descriptions include: 1. Igneous, metamorphic, sedimentary? Mixed? Degree of weathering? NOTE: some of these rocks are highly weathered which makes their identification much more difficult. 2. Color 3. Mineralogy 4. Grainsize (crystals or grains?) a. If crystals; fine, coarse, or mixed? Cooled slow or fast? b. If grains; sedimentary what are their texture? Sorting, grainsize, shape (rounded/angular) 5. Layering a. Bedding and Stratification b. GEOL124 Geology of Natural Resources Page 2 Rock Number Description Other information/ Additional Research*
GEOL124 Geology of Natural Resources Page 3 Slab** Number Observations and description (Include Age and category of rock) Interesting information/ Additional Research* * Spend a few minutes learning more about this rock from research on the internet ** Slabs are located in the south-east stairwell of the Smith Natural Resources building. I have numbered them by the floor and the panel number. For example on the 3rd floor there are panels 3a, 3b, 3c, 3d and 3e. Choose one of these for a slab you will describe above. Extra Credit: Look at the rock that makes up the outside of the Natural Resources building, and also the amphitheater area that is to the East of the building (in an area we call Sherwood Forest). What is the rock type on the outside of the Natural Resources building? (HINT: it is from the Lyons formation). This is a common building material in and around the Front Range and makes up most of the buildings on the CSU (and CU) campus. What is the local source (quarry) for this rock?
